Using the Polar Si 8000 Excel Interface • Graphing impedance against Er with the Polar Si 8000 Controlled Impedance Field Solver
Using the Si 8000 Excel Interface This tutorial explains how to change the axes of charts in Si 8000 Excel workbooks so you can graph any variable you choose – Z 0 against H, Z 0 against Er, etc… 2
How to use this tutorial Please run through all the slides in this presentation to give yourself an overview. Then launch the Si 8000 and click the Surface Microstrip graphic and work through the example yourself. If you have not already done so, download and follow the introductory tutorial Getting started with the Polar Si 8000 – Using the Polar Si 8000 Excel Interface. This tutorial uses Excel’s Chart Wizard – if you are not familiar with some of the features of Excel you may find it worth taking a brief course to get the best from your Si 8000. 3 Using Excel with the Si 8000 allows you to build customised worksheets based on direct access to the Si 8000’s boundary element field solving engine
Graphing Z 0 against Er Each chart defaults to graphing Z 0, impedance against H 1, the substrate height. You’ll use the Excel Chart Wizard to change the chart source data to show results for other columns. 4
Choosing the model Begin by choosing the Surface Microstrip controlled impedance structure from the Si 8000’s structure page Start Si 8000 Excel and click Surface Microstrip 1 B 5
Preparing the table Let’s see how Er influences Z 0 6 The table containing the structure function and predefined parameters for the Surface Microstrip is displayed along with its associated chart
Changing table values Drag the first value of H 1 down to make H 1 constant 7 You want to graph Z 0 against Er so begin by assigning constant values to all the other parameters. You’ll make H 1 a constant value and vary Er
Assigning a range of values to Er Next – use the Fill Handle to complete the series of values for Er Fill the first two cells in the Er column with the values 4. 6 and 4. 55 respectively and drag to complete the series 8
Assigning a range of values to Er Now the table has the correct range of values for Er 9
Changing the chart source data Now you can change the chart source data to graph Z 0 against Er. Right click the data Choose Source Data… point 10
Changing the X axis Now you can change the chart source data to graph Z 0 against Er. Change the Category (X) axis labels Choose the Series tab from the H 1 column to the Er column. 11
Changing the X axis Click the Collapse Dialog button to display …click again to choose …note the new range – the new range (C 5: C 31) click again to confirm the current range (B 5: B 31)… 12 You can use Excel’s Collapse Dialog buttons to change the chart source data – let’s start by changing the X axis labels.
Changing the Y axis Now change the Y axis (Values) range. If necessary, repeat for the Don’t forget to relabel Values range – in this the chart X axis to E example that’s H 5: H 31 r 13
Finalising the chart These are the two ranges you will chart. Now you can fill this …and press Calculate column with the formula 14
Viewing the results The finished result… …Z 0 against Er Field solving is Try correcting this for An error has crept into complete – but what’s yourself to see the table this? !! expected smooth curve 15
