Let's Talk About Multiplication Goal: for students to explain their math process and gain a visual understanding of their solutions. Using Pear Deck, students will have an opportunity to talk about, draw, and reflect on one & two-digit multiplication. The questions in this lesson are based on activities and research done by Jo Boaler.

Task #2 Using the drawing tool, create a visual representation of the solution you came up with in the last slide. Remember, the problem was to solve: 18 x 5.

Reflection Question First of all, do you see that you were able to solve a problem that Stanford University students had to think about? That's pretty amazing, isn't it? Now that you've heard from students at Stanford, have your thoughts on your solution or your process of coming up with the solution changed? Did you learn anything new from the video responses? What confused you about the video responses?

Visualizing Math Solutions Math is a very visual language. Once you begin to see it, you begin to truly understand it! Let’s work on visualizing some multiplication concepts!

Modeling Multiplication Here is a visual representation of the number 36. 36 is 9 x 4. One way to see this, visually, would be 9 sets of dice, with the 4 facing up. That’s what 9 x 4 represents. Nine sets of 4’s. Count them all up and you get 36!

Look at the "image bank" to spark some ideas & then fill in the chart with (Note: there is more than one correct answer. ) appropriate visual representations of the products.
