Using Positive Reinforcement to Increase Positive Behaviors Uso
Using Positive Reinforcement to Increase Positive Behaviors. Uso del Refuerzo positivo para aumentar los comportamientos positivos How it works and why it works Cómo funciona y por qué funciona
Increasing Behaviors • • • Behaviors we want to increase include: Cleaning up Brushing your teeth Doing homework Playing nicely with siblings • How can we get our children to engage in these positive behaviors? By using positive reinforcement
Reinforcement • Reinforcer: – Something given dependent upon a behavior that increases the likelihood that behavior will happen again in the future – If the behavior does not increase as a result of the something , that something is NOT a reinforcer!!!! (even if it is something pleasant)
Increasing Behaviors Reinforcement • Positive Reinforcement: addition of something immediately following a behavior which increases the likelihood that behavior will occur again in the future. • Negative Reinforcement: removal of something undesirable which increases the future occurrence of that behavior.
Example • Anthony never traces lowercase letters without asking for help. His mom wants to teach him to trace lowercase letters independently. • Every time Anthony traces a lowercase letter without help his mom gives him a big hug. • Anthony now traces lowercase letters independently every time they are presented.
Example • Sammy’s mom wants him to ask for a “break” when he becomes frustrated while doing his homework. • Sammy is doing a matching worksheet. After 2 question, Sammy’s mom prompts him to say “break. ” • His mom immediately says “okay” and allows Sammy to get up from the table for 5 minutes. • Sammy asks for a break 10 more times and does not become frustrated while doing his homework that night
Positive Reinforcement • Primary Reinforcers: Innate reinforcers-serve a biological function: water, food, warmth, and sensory reinforcers. • Secondary Reinforcers: Toys, activities, social praise, tokens (money). Some become powerful because they were paired with primary or other secondary reinforcers.
Refuerzo positivo • Reforzadores primarios: Los reforzadores innatos sirven a una función biológica: agua, alimentos, calor y refuerzos sensoriales. • Reforzadores Secundarios: Juguetes, actividades, alabanza social, fichas (dinero).
Positive Reinforcement • Anything can act as a reinforcer! • Common examples include; food, drinks, bubbles, music, swinging, tickles, hugs, water play, etc. • Think outside the box!!
Reinforcement vs. Bribery • Reinforcement means providing a reward after your child has exhibited a positive behavior that you want them to do again in the future. • Bribery means providing a reward or preferred item after your child has exhibited a negative behavior in order to get them to stop the negative behavior.
Rules of R+ 1. Anything, no matter what it is, is a reinforcer if it is increases a certain behavior every time you give that something immediately after the behavior occurs 2. What may be a reinforcer for one child may not be a reinforcer for another child. 3. Always give the reinforcer immediately after the behavior occurs
Rules of Reinforcement • Don’t give the reinforcer if your child has not engaged in the behavior you want to increase. • When you are teaching your child a new behavior, give the reinforcer EVERY time your child performs that behavior. Once they perform that behavior consistently, only give the reinforcer every couple of times.
How to Use Reinforcement at Home • • • “Catch them being good” Have realistic expectations Be clear about your expectations Provide as much structure as possible Arrange your home for success
Discussion • Have you used reinforcement with your child before? What behavior did you teach them? What was the experience like? • What are some problems you encountered when trying to use reinforcement? • Questions for the presenters?
