Open Educational Resources (OER) ● Free and openly licensed, online educational materials that can be used for teaching, learning, research, and other purposes. ● OERs include textbooks, streaming videos, full courses, online modules, podcasts and other types of audio. Why OER? ● Avg. of $1200 a year ● Performance & achievement affected by affordability/accessibility ● Demand from students ● OER movement ● Provost’s goals ● Sharing knowledge ● Pedagogical innovation
OER grants for USC faculty ● Increase faculty adoption of OER by integrating at least 1 OER into course ● Lower cost of class materials for students ● Partnered with the Center for Excellence in Teaching (CET) to provide course design and syllabi modification support ● Participants attended a workshop, worked with librarians to find appropriate OER and met with CET instructional designers ● Worked with faculty Spring and Summer for Fall courses
Results of grant program Cohort 1, Grant started July 2016, Implemented OER Spring 2017 ● 4 faculty members selected: Business, International Relations, Music, Social Work Cohort 2 (current), Grant started July 2017, Implement Fall 2018 ● 3 faculty members selected: Business, Occupational Therapy, Public Policy Grant information: http: //libguides. usc. edu/oer/grant
