Using One Point Perspective In Art
What does the word “perspective” mean? m Perspective is the way you see, or view something. It can be a literal view: “From the perspective of where I sit in my living room, I can see the neighbors receive an awful lot of packages from Amazon. ” Or an abstract view: “From my perspective, I believe my neighbors have a hoarding problem. ”
How do you utilize perspective in art? One way we use perspective in art is to give a two dimensional drawing, like the flat family’ s house on the left, dimension. For example: The drawing on the right IS two dimensional (height and width), but the way the artist has drawn it, it looks three dimensional (you can see depth because a second side of the house has been drawn).
Perspective drawing is a technique used to depict spatial depth, or perspective. In other words, it allows you to accurately draw a three dimensional object onto a two dimensional plane. There are three types of perspective drawing: one-point perspective two-point perspective And take a guess…
Yep. . . three-point perspective. You’re brilliant.
We are going to learn about one-point perspective.
Look around the room you are in. . . You may see a bed, a table, a chair-maybe a couch. Do you see all sides of the furniture in the room (at the same time)? The answer is nooooo. That’s because your eyes don’t see everything at once. From your PERSPECTIVE, you only see parts of any piece of furniture at one time. Stand in the middle of your street and look down the street. (watch for cars) Does the street seem like it narrows the further away from you it is? From your PERSPECTIVE, the road narrows as you look down it towards the HORIZON.
What sides do you see? What sides don’t you see?
The road looks like it is getting more narrow the further away it is. Is the road actually getting more narrow?
Artists consider what the eye can see from any given perspective, and draws it accordingly. To the left is an actual bedroom. To the right is a painting of a bedroom. Vincent Van Gogh is the artist who painted the scene on the right.
HORIZON LINE The horizon line is the physical/visual boundary where the sky separates from land or water. So when you’re gazing off into the distance across a body of land or water, you are seeing the horizon line.
EYE LEVEL Eye level means the same thing as horizon line. It is the actual height of the viewer’s eyes when they are looking at an object, interior scene, or an outside scene.
vanishing point A vanishing point is an important part of many works of art. It is a point on the horizon line used to create drawings that have a three-dimensional look.
You see a different side of an object, depending on where you are standing.
The horizon line and vanishing point are used in drawing so what you are drawing looks like it would in real life.
Parallel lines Two lines, the same distance apart, that do not meet…ever.
