Using graphs and probabilities
Journal 12 What is the relationship with graphs and probabilities? How can you transform one into the other?
Titanic Disaster The RMS Titanic had 2224 people on board ship (including children), yet there was lifeboat space for only 1178. Various factors that day also made it so many lifeboats were not full when they were launched. Question – what is the probability of survival?
Question to answer Is this probability a true reflection for the actual survival rate of the Titanic? Why or why not? What type of people survived? Did all members of any group survive?
Create a variety of graphical representations for the survival rate of women – minimum of five graphs for the data
probability Determine the probability, for each group, that if you were a woman then you survived the sinking of the Titanic. Determine the probability, for each group, that you were lost.
Knowing the probabilities associated with survival and loss of life for each group, explain why the probabilities are what they are.
Create a variety of graphical representations for the survival rate of men. Minimum of 5 graphs for the data.
Determine the probability, for each group, that if you were a man then you survived the sinking of the Titanic. Determine the probability, for each group, that you were lost.
Knowing the probabilities associated with survival and loss of life for each group, explain why the probabilities are what they are.
Children Children were not separated by gender or by class. There were 109 children on board the Titanic. 56 died and 53 survived. Create graphs for this data and calculate the probability rate for survival if you were a child. Calculate the probability that you were lost if you were a child.
Question In relation to the Titanic assignments, answer the following: Historically when populations are in danger, societies protect women and children. Does the Titanic data support this priority? What evidence supports your answer.
Class of passengers Get the total class probability for men and women combined.
Class of passengers Class of travel may have influenced the survival rate. Does the data support this notion? Why or why not?
Determining an equal survival rate Since the gender of children are not known, we will only use values of the men and the women. We need to find a survival rate that is unbiased on gender
Survived Died Total Men 1690 Women 425 Total 654 1461 2115
Question What do the probability rates tell you about the time period of 1912 in relationship to the Titanic disaster?
