Key Topic 1: Why did the USA and USSR become rivals in the period 1941 -49? The ideological differences between capitalism and communism always made a conflict likely between Russia and America. Based upon our learning, which 1 statement do you most agree with, and 1 statement do you disagree with? Explain your answer. Challenge: How would you change one of these statements to make them more nuanced and historically accurate? Russia was completely to blame for causing the Cold War. The Cold War could have been avoided. America was completely innocent in causing the Cold War.
Step 1: Decide which statements are true and which are false. Step 2: Explain your decision, supported with evidence. There were dramatic differences between communism and capitalism. Challenge: Can you correct the statements to make them more historically accurate and nuanced? Stalin completely trusted America and Britain. He had no reason not to! The Cold War started before 1945 (the end of the WW 2). The Grand Alliance was only a “marriage of convenience”.
