Use the Force Magnets have a magnetic field

- Slides: 17
Use the Force Magnets have a magnetic field around them that produces a pulling force on some materials. This pulling force can go through other materials such as paper or wood. Try it! Place a magnet behind a piece of paper and see if a paper clip is attracted to the magnet through the paper. Compa ss Fridge Vendin g. Machi ne Laptop
Useful Magnets This magnetic force can be used… to point north in a compass; to hold a fridge door closed; to sort coins in a vending machine. in a laptop lid so that the computer can tell if it is open or closed;
Magnetic Games You are going to design and create a game that uses magnetic force to attract materials. You will have chance to try out your games and evaluate them. There are several ideas for games you may choose to make. Have a look at the suggestions in the slides below. Racing Game Fishing Game Magnetic Maze
Magnetic Fishing Make simple fishing rods with a garden cane, some string and a ring magnet Make a pond with a pond shaped piece of paper or a cardboard box lined with paper. Cut out fish from coloured card, felt or foam, or draw your own pond creatures on card. Use a paperclip or paper fastener to make them magnetic
Turn it into a game by: • Racing to catch the most fish • Competing to see who can catch the fish with the highest total score • Racing to catch all the fish in the fastest time • Design your own fishing game You can write scores on the back of your fish or pond creatures.
Magnetic Tracks Draw a track, maze or course on a large sheet of card. Then draw, colour and cut out items to go on your track. Make them magnetic by adding a paperclip or paper fastener to each one.
Remember we learnt that magnetic force can work through solid materials, so with a strong magnet under the table you will be able to move your magnet items along the track as if by magic! Turn it into a game by: • Racing another player to get to the end of the track or maze • • • Competing to get to the end in the fastest time Chasing someone else, e. g. cat and mouse Invent your own track game
Or why not make a craft set so people can design their own fridge magnets?
Or you could make a craft set for people to create crazy magnetic hair styles using wand magnets and funky pipe cleaners
You could design your own board game that uses magnetism Caterpillar Wars In this game players compete to make the longest string of magnetic marbles You could develop your own board game idea
Or design your own game or puzzle that has magnetic pieces
These resources will help you Small magnetic whiteboards will give you a base for your magnetic game board You can draw a game that is exactly the right size to fit over the top Stick a little magnetic tape on the back to make any object magnetic
Design and Make Your Magnetic Game! Use your Magnetic Game Activity Sheet to design your game and explain how it uses magnetic force to attract materials. When you are happy with your design, it is time to make it!
Play and Evaluate Share your game with someone at home. Explain how your game works, then try it out together. How do the games work? How are magnets used in each game?
