The HLLC is a place based initiative: “In Newark, of Newark. ” In 2010, Newark had: • the largest number of Latino (93, 746) and Black (145, 085) residents of any municipality in New Jersey. • In 2015, only 16% of Newark residents who were 25 years of age or older had attained a bachelor’s degree or higher, in comparison to the statewide average of 38% (20112015 American Community Survey). There are staggering numbers of exceptionally talented, critically minded, and academically promising individuals who are experiencing real structural barriers to higher education.
