History • The rivalry between the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins dates back to 1929. – However, there were no games played between 1931 -35 due to the Bruins inability to field a competitive football team. • The teams have played a total of 86 games. – USC owns the rivalry 46 -35, with seven ties.
History • The rivalry between the schools became known as the “Crosstown Gauntlet, ” but later was renamed the “Lexus Gauntlet” in 2006. • Among the most significant games in the rivalry include the November 1967 and December 2006 games.
November 1967 • This is known as the most significant game in the USC-UCLA rivalry to many of the team’s fans. • In this game USC Trojans were ranked #1 and UCLA Bruins #2.
November 1967 • Both teams were matched for first three quarters until Gary Baban put the Bruins up in the fourth quarter, making the score 20 -14. • The Trojans came back and eventually triumphed. • This led USC to win the game and defeat the Indiana Hossiers in the 1968 Rose Bowl; giving the team their 6 th National Title.
December 2006 • USC was on their way to the 2007 National Championship; therefore, this was a very crucial game for the team. • With UCLA being humiliated by USC in the previous year by a score of 66 -19, the team sought revenge for the embarrassment.
December 2006 • During the game, John David Booty threw for 274 yards, but made one costly interception. – This in turn led to UCLA to triumph in the end and win 13 -9, costing USC the shot at another National Championship.
