Appearance The public does not differentiate between Coast Guard active duty and the Auxiliary, especially when the uniform is worn. Coast Guard active duty members are bound by strict military grooming and weight standards. Realizing that the Auxiliary is made up entirely of volunteers, the active duty grooming and appearance standards are relaxed as they apply to Auxiliarist. As a matter of pride, all Auxiliary members should set the goal to strive to attain the same standards as active duty members. Auxiliarist who wear the Auxiliary uniform will be held to higher grooming and appearance standards than those who wear the Auxiliary Blue Blazer outfit. The Auxiliary Blue Blazer outfit is optional apparel and is authorized for activities described in Chapter 10. National Department of Human Resource

Makeshift Uniforms • Members need to be aware that active duty members wear the uniform with pride and when they see an Auxiliarist improperly dressed it can be seen as offensive to the service. Additionally, most Auxiliarist interact with stations where the young influential active duty members are abundant. Here, it’s especially important to set the proper uniform image at all levels. • If it doesn't match the material and construction, it is no-longer uniform National Department of Human Resource

• If one cannot afford the cost of a proper uniform do not to spend the money on creating a look alike. Someone right out of boot camp can spot the difference quicker than saying Semper Paratus. • It would be better if the member is in civilian attire than a improper uniform. Grooming • Auxiliarist who desire to wear their hair, jewelry, or maintain a general appearance different from that described in Chapter 10 shall wear the Auxiliary Blue Blazer outfit instead of the Auxiliary uniform. • Or proper civilian attire • Waivers for any deviations from the grooming and appearance standards described in Chapter 10 must be submitted through the chain to the appropriate Director. Blue Blazer and Other Items • Auxiliary rings, lapel pins and blazer patch okay • Auxiliary Blue Blazer may substitute for all uniforms, except ODU’s. • Blue Blazer worn with white or gray pants or skirt, white shirt, black shoes and tie for men. National Department of Human Resource

“Service Peculiar” Standards (continued) • Men cannot wear earrings. Women can wear small silver or pearl studs. Diamond studs can be worn with dress uniform. • Necklaces, chains, suspenders, pens, handkerchiefs, etc…should not be visible. • Hair should be neat and clean and above the collar (for men) or at the collar (for women). OPERATIONAL DRESS UNIFORM (ODU) UNISEX • Uniform sew-on devices will now display a black “A” for Auxiliary. The Red and Blue “A” designation has been discontinued for use on ODU only but still applies to dress uniforms It is not a Liberty Uniform. National Department of Human Resource

Hats/Caps • Combination Cap • Can be worn with most uniforms • Men’s and women’s styles • Garrison Cap • Use with Trop’s and cannot be worn with service dress after Dec. 2012 • With small cap device (left) and small metal office insignia (right) National Department of Human Resource

Name Tags • • White with CG blue lettering. 3 3/16 in. wide and 5/8 in. high. Surname only. US. Coast Guard Auxiliary below name. National Department of Human Resource

Collar Devices • Open collared short sleeve shirt - placed on center of collar flap, along a line bisecting collar • Long sleeved Light blue and winter blue (with tie) - placed parallel to front edge of collar National Department of Human Resource

When Wearing a Uniform is Prohibited • • In public places of dubious reputation When engaged in political activities When in a foreign country Don’t wear distinctive parts of the uniform or insignia with civilian clothes. • You may not wear a uniform for extended travel (air, train, car) unless under US Coast Guard orders only - that is: to and from your location National Department of Human Resource

Discontinued and the term “Serviceable” • Ball caps with scrambled eggs or any other markings are to be discontinued for wear by Dec 31, 2012 • Auxiliarists may use commercial sources for buying uniforms and insignia, except for Auxiliary ball caps.
