State of LARP Highlights 11/1/2006 - Shiltsev 3
After LBL Mtg - Acc. Syst Highlights • • Schottky being baked, will go into tunnel TCFB: success at SPS 4 long-term hardware commissioners @CERN SLAC joins commissioning forces LHC@FNAL to open in Nov’ 07, new - LAFS RC work at full speed, a lot of changes, delay SPS beam studies: BBQ PLL, Q’ head-tail, bent crystal, etc • Wires built for RHIC tests • # of LARP presentations at Valencia workshop • etc etc (details in breakout sessions) LARP Highlights 11/1/2006 - Shiltsev 4

Transient Time Method of OSC . . bypass . . undulator radiation pulse amplifier energy gain/loss ~10 mm dz is particle delay A pick-up and a kicker should be installed in a position with a nonzero dispersion function for a simultaneous cooling of energy and transverse coordinates (similar to the Palmer’s method of the momentum cooling ). transverse kick before kick { after kick Coupling is used to share dumping between horizontal and vertical coordinates LARP Highlights 11/1/2006 - Shiltsev energy kick 8
Optical Stochastic Cooling A. Zholents Damping time, sec Lead ions Undulator: period-=7 m field = 10 T, number of periods = 3 Needs for R&D: • Bypass optics • Optical amplifier Amplifier average power (W) • Proof-of-principle with electrons Damping time for protons ~ 5 hours at 1 k. W amplifier power Plan of Action : support letter for OSC demonstration experiment (NSF) wait for results LARP Highlights 11/1/2006 - Shiltsev 9
Short Summary on MIT OSC: 1. OSC promises very fast cooling of ions, 20 hrs for 7 Te. V protons ~(25 -50)% in luminosity integral. 2. Asking ~0. 3 M$ from NSF in FY 07 to develop 2 W optical amplifier (adds 6 mm of path); and ~0. 5 M$/yr over ~3 yrs to prepare machine for 250 Me. V studies, bypass, etc 3. MIT Ring is occupied by users 4. Strong optical team, weaker accelerator team 5. That makes prospects not very bright 6. Still worth trying – moral support from LARP but no funds. CARE–HHH: upgrades discussed • IR Upgrade: – both quad first paths Nb. Sn, Nb. Ti • Magnet R&D…Magnet R&D – D 0 3. 5 m from IP – <1 mrad Crab Crossing not excluded • Low cost, potential high gain: – low-noise feedback – collimator schemes (RC, LEL, Crystals) – beam-beam compensation schemes (W, LEL) • Upgrade of Injector Chain: – new Linac, PS+, PS 2 – SPS+ incl SF-SPS (initiate Task Force–see below) 11 LARP Highlights 11/1/2006 - Shiltsev
1. 5 Te. V Super. Ferric Injector in LHC tunnel H. Piekarz LARP Highlights 11/1/2006 - Shiltsev 12
Summary of the LER Workshop Oct 10 -11, 2006 CERN • LER in LHC tunnel – gains • • • Higher injection energy 1. 5 Te. V Faster turn around time Better beam stability Double Np/bunch by e. g. slip stacking Save ~1 yr or no-L time by installing during shutdowns – concerns • • all the “gain” arguments are not strong Problems: reliability, protection, n-flux, AC d. Q, Slip. St. 50 Ge. V PS+ will address reasons #3 -5 Pilot bunch…. many others concerning operation • Team was very inventive in solving problems – E. g. pilot bunch problem – a neat soltion found, etc LARP Highlights 11/1/2006 - Shiltsev 13
Another Outcome of the Workshop • Proposal of ~500 Ge. V superferric SPS+: – Addresses many (all) SPS problems – Promises same or faster filling time and x 2 Np – Enables technology for 1. 5 Te. V LER in future LARP Highlights 11/1/2006 - Shiltsev 14
Super. Ferric Synchrotron SPS+ Injection energy 50 Ge. V (from PS+) Extraction energy ~500 Ge. V (to LHC thru existing lines) Max field 1. 67 T Max current 67 k. A Packing factor ~90% Cycle Time 6 s Beam pipe 2 ax 2 b 40 x 70 mm (coated Al) Total cost ~80 M$ LARP Highlights 11/1/2006 - Shiltsev 15
Possible Way to Go: • Form a CERN-US SF-SPS Task Force – To evaluate the proposal – Interested at CERN: L. Rossi, G. de. Rijk, T. Taylor, E. Shaposhnikova – Interested at FNAL: H. Piekarz, T. Sen, A. Zlobin, V. Shiltsev, S. Hays, J. Johnstone • Report to R. Garoby(? ) in ~1 yr. • ~No LARP funds available now • Can become a potential LARP task AS+MAG LARP Highlights 11/1/2006 - Shiltsev 16
