US LHC Accelerator Research Program bnl - fnal- lbnl - slac This section of LQ 05 was measured on the Fermilab CMM at several places longitudinally, and by LBNL at one place longitudinally. Traditionally, coil measurement positions are designated by a number, defined as the “distance in mm from the lead end”, which refers to the back of the lead end splice block, as shown below. LQ 05 was measured previously (after fabrication), at positions 7, 598, 1664, 2409 and 2985. Splice Block 2

US LHC Accelerator Research Program bnl - fnal- lbnl - slac The recently measured section was cut from coil LQ 05, and does not include the lead end. However, since the removed section can be precisely located with respect to the original coil, the traditional designation of positions has been retained. The removed section begins at position 391, and ends at position 1665, as shown below. Measurements of the cut section were taken at Fermilab on 1 -20 -2010 at positions 450, 571. 704, 708, 1027, 1476, 1609, 1629, 1639, 1649, and 1659. The position measured at LBNL was 1639, so many measurements were taken near this position. 3

US LHC Accelerator Research Program bnl - fnal- lbnl - slac Measurements taken of the cut section of LQ 05 on Jan. 21, 2010 are shown in slides 5 -15. These measurements were taken after the coil was used in a quench heater test at 77 K at Fermilab, then cut into the existing section and used in a mechanical model at LBNL. Coordinate system for measurements: X axis: coil is centered, so that any variation from nominal is centered between the right and left sides. Y axis: an average of the points taken on the outer perimeter of the outer layer is defined as “zero” so any variation from nominal is seen to appear on the inner radial surface and on the 45 degree azimuthal surfaces. This is done because the coil, when installed in the magnet, is located with reference to the outer surface of the outer layer. All measurements show the coil while “looking from the lead end”. 4

US LHC Accelerator Research Program bnl - fnal- lbnl - slac Original Measurements When coil LQ 05 was fabricated (February 2009), it was impregnated twice due to poor epoxy fill in some areas. Consequently it was measured twice at that time, after the first and after the 2 nd impregnation. Measuring position for both of these measurements were at 7, 598, 1664, 2409 and 2985. Both measurements were consistent with each other, and consistent with the measurements taken on Jan 21, 2010. Those that fall within the cut section (598 and 1664) are shown in slides 18 -21. 17

US LHC Accelerator Research Program bnl - fnal- lbnl - slac Conclusion: CMM measurements of coil LQ 05 in the free state taken on Jan. 20, 2010 are consistent with measurements taken immediately after fabrication (February of 2009) on the same coil. If the outer radial surface is defined as zero, all measurements show the coil to be between 3 and 5 mils (75 -125 µm) more material than nominal on the azimuthal surfaces and 2 -7 mils (50 -175 µm) more material than nominal on the inner radial surface, with the left side of the coil (when looking from the lead end) thicker than the right side. 22
