Lesson 1 – A New Party in Power o Judiciary Act of 1801 n n n Before Jefferson took office, Federalists pass the Judiciary Act of 1801. . . sets up new courts In his last days as President, Adams appointed hundreds of new judges. . . wanted Federalists to control the courts Judges didn’t get the position until they received their official papers, or commissions Some judges didn’t receive their commission by the time Jefferson took office Jefferson ordered his Secretary of State, James Madison, to not deliver the remaining ones One man who didn’t receive his, William Marbury, took his case to the Supreme Court
