Hitler and his wife committed suicide in their Berlin bunker as the Allies closed in. On May 8 th, 1945, Germany surrendered.
US forces waged an “island hopping” campaign to recapture Japanese-held islands to serve as stepping stones to Japan. Air bases were built on captured islands from which US bombers could hit Japan.
