How to tally species for Urban FIA Genus? Species? Hybrid? Variety? How do I deal with it all? ? ?
Dealing with Genus and Species
Genus: Prunus Species: LISTED • pensylvanica (pin cherry) • serotina (black cherry) • virginiana (common choke cherry) • persica (peach) • nigra (Canada plum) • americana (American plum) • emarginata (bitter cherry) • alleghaniensis (Allegheny plum) • angustifolia (Chickasaw plum) • avium (sweet cherry- domesticated) • cerasus (sour cherry- domesticated) • domestica (European plum- domesticated) • mahaleb (Mehaleb plum- domesticated) • cerasifera (cheery plum) • laurocerasus (cherry laurel) • serrulata (Japanese flowering cherry) • x yedoensis (Yoshino flowering cherry) NOT LISTED • maackii (Manchurian cherry • armeniaca (apricot) • soooo many others. .
Tricky Stuff with Genus and Species. . . NRS Exceptions"NRS Note: All larch (Larix spp. ), serviceberry (Amelanchier spp. ), hawthorn (Crataegus spp. ), apple (Malus spp. ), cottonwood and poplar (Populus spp. ), pear (Pyrus spp. ) and mountain ash (Sorbus spp. ) are tallied. These species can be coded using the generic genus code (0070, 0356, 0500, 0660, 0740, 8420, and 0934). . . if the species cannot be determined. "
Tricky Stuff with Genus and Species. . . Synonyms. If your species is not listed in App 3 or 3 b, check the NRCS PLANTS Database for synonyms. Type in the species you have identified and see if it has any "synonyms" that are listed as a tally species. If so, tally it using the code of the listed synonym. https: //plants. usda. gov/java/
Dealing with Hybrids Acer x freemanii (red x saccharinum hybrid) Acer rubrum (red) Acer saccharinum (silver) This can happen naturally or through careful, purposeful cross pollination. 5. 8+U "If a hybrid species is found, naturally or planted, and is listed in the Appendix 3 or Appendix 3 BU, use the hybrid code; otherwise code the parent species with the most dominant characteristic from Appendix 3 or Appendix 3 BU. If neither the hybrid nor either of the parent species are listed, then do not tally the species and follow NON-TALLY TREE procedures in Section 3. 19 U. "
Tricky Stuff with Hybrids. . . Elm Hybrids - Frontier Elm Ulmus carpinifolia x Ulmus parvifolia ‘Frontier’ • Talk to City Forester regarding what Elms have been planted • So many hybrids…. Code based on characteristics observed in the field • We may not really know what specific cross was used to develop the tree
Tricky Stuff with Hybrids. . . Co-located plots IF by chance you are measuring the same tree on a core p 2 plot and an Urban plot, SPP and USPP will be different. Example- Acer x freemanii
Dealing with Varieties and Sub-species 5983 Fagus sylvatica (European beech) 5983 Fagus sylvatica Var. Riversii (European beech Variety Rivers Purple) 5. 8 +U "If a variety or subspecies is found, naturally or planted, and is listed in Appendix 3 or Appendix 3 BU, use the corresponding variety/ subspecies code. If the variety is not listed, but the species is listed, code the specimen using the species code. "
A note that Bradford Pear is a cultivar of the Callery Pear. We see it often and Callery Pear is listed in the manual (Appendix 3 B). Since Bradford is a cultivar of Callery, we tally them as a Callery. The Midas program help menu for many states has it incorrectly listed as Bradford- so if you do a text search for the code using Callery, you won't find it- you'll have to search "Bradford" for the code (or pear). Just be aware of that. If you have a callery pear or a Bradford pear they get tallied as 8421.
Tally Tree? The weeping elm A variety of Ulmus glabra, the ‘Camperdown’ has a widespreading, weeping habit and is an attractive specimen tree. Here, it is grafted on to an ordinary elm rootstock. The leaves are longer than the common elm. Not listed in Appendix 3 or Appendix 3 b Non-Tally Tree 5. 8+U "When trees are grafted, use the dominant characteristics visible on the tree to assign the species. "
5. 8+U URBAN SPECIES In Summary If a hybrid species is found, naturally or planted, and is listed in the Appendix 3 or Appendix 3 BU, use the hybrid code; otherwise code the parent species with the most dominant characteristic from Appendix 3 or Appendix 3 BU. If neither the hybrid nor either of the parent species are listed, then do not tally the species and follow NON-TALLY TREE procedures in Section 3. 19 U. If a variety or subspecies is found, naturally or planted, and is listed in Appendix 3 or Appendix 3 BU, use the corresponding variety/ subspecies code. If the variety is not listed, but the species is listed, code the specimen using the species code. When trees are grafted, use the dominant characteristics visible on of the tree to assign the species.
