CVVAMC History • • • The Carl Vinson VA Medical Center (CVVAMC) is one of 153 Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers with five satellite clinics in Albany, Brunswick, Macon, Milledgeville, Perry, and Tifton, Georgia Provides primary care and specialty services to 38, 000 Veterans in 52 middle and south Georgia counties Largest employer in Laurens County, Georgia Construction began in October 1943; originally a US Navy hospital Became a VA hospital on Jan. 22, 1948 Once housed German POWs in brig cells after the end of WW II Visited by Helen Keller, April 30, 1948 Oscar-winning actor Ernest Borgnine appeared in the play “John Loves Mary” at the CVVAMC in 1948 Cochise’s grandson, a Veteran, passed away at the medical center Once cared for two of the last remaining Spanish-American War Veterans Two-time Oscar-winning actor & WWII Veteran Harold Russell once visited
