Ursa Minor By Skylar Cerbone What the Little Dipper means to different cultures.
My task was to find out what the Ursa Minor or commonly know as the Little Dipper mean to different cultures. The ancient Greeks used the stars to represent their Gods and heroes such as Zeus and Hercules. To the Chinese constellations told stories of everyday people, of great generals in battle or royal paradise. These constellations and their stories are used to predict seasonal change and a calendar.
What the Little Dipper means to the ancient Egyptians and Africans. In Ancient Egypt there were many myths Gods that were represented in the sky through Constellations. The brightest star in the sky represents the Egyptian Goddess Isis. To the Africans the Pleiades or the seven sisters star cluster was very important to the African people The Masai of East Africa saw this cluster as a herd of cattle. The Bantu people of southern Africa saw the Pleiades as a plow. The picture on top is a picture of the Greek god Isis. The lower picture shows the night sky in all its glory.
The Native Americans and their stars Among the Native Americans the Cherokee told stories of the Dog stars. They speak of a journey they must pass throuh the sky
