Background �At the end of the 19 th Century, urban railway transportation began in Ottoman Empire era. �In 1869, first mounted tram was used in Istanbul and in 1912, these trams began to be operated with electricity. �In 1874, one of the first railway system which is called Tunnel began to be operated between Beyoglu and Karakoy in Istanbul.
Urban Railway Systems in Istanbul �There have been lots of attempts to construct metro system in Istanbul. Finally, Istanbul meets the metro in 1989 in the destination between Aksaray and Ferhatpasa. �After these attempts, Istanbul has six different lines in different destination. These can be classified as the Light Rail and Metro systems.

Urban Railway System in Ankara �Attempts in constructing railway systems began in 1972 in Ankara. �In the frame of the study between 1984 and 1989, EGO General Directorate planned 55 Km railway system network throughout Ankara by 2015. �In the light of these studies, construction for the light railway system began in 1992 in Ankara. This system (Ankaray) began the revenue service in 1996.

The length of the line is 21 km and began its service in 2002. �The other lines are being planned or under construction.

Urban Railway System in Eskisehir �The construction of the system began in 2002 and it was finished in 20 months. Revenue service began at the end of 2004. �There are two different lines which connects the two different university campuses to each other. Total length is 15 km with 26 stations. In weekdays, average passenger flow is 75. 000 and at weekends, 45. 000 passengers are carried.

Urban Railway System in Kayseri �This light railway system is under construction. This system is planned in four steps. The first step will be 18 km with 31 stations. This system will be operated with 22 vehicles. The construction began two years ago and in 2009, it will be in service.

Urban Railway System in Samsun �The light railway system of Samsun is being projected. The first step will connect city center to university campus and will be 16. 5 km. �There are studies on the destination, designs of the stations and the technology which will be used in operation.
