Urbanisation Urbanisation is the movement of people from rural areas to large cities Urbanisation is an increase in the percentage of a population living in urban areas. It is caused by: migration to urban areas higher birth rates in urban areas and higher death rates in rural areas due to famine decreased standard of living and poor water and hygiene It can also be caused by incorporation of rural areas into urban areas. Increased dramatically since 1950 and is set to double in some countries between now and 2050
Activity UNICEF Map: http: //www. unicef. org/sowc 2012/urbanmap/ In pairs explore the map. What do you think this is depicting? In pairs students are assigned a country. They must follow that country from 1950 to 2050. They should note the percentage of urban population each decade and calculate which decade had/has the greatest growth in urban population. Students are then grouped in region, Asian, African, American, Europe, etc. They are to compare notes and describe any similarities or differences and note if any areas had a decrease in urban population. Group discussion of findings, and what this means.
