Upward Basketball New Coach Training This training lesson will be posted at http: //highlandscc. org/upward/
Our mission is… “To promote the discovery of Jesus through sports. ”
The 360 Coach As an Upward coach, you have the important responsibility of developing your young athletes in their personal growth mentally, athletically, spiritually and socially. This unique approach is called the 360 Progression™ and is based on Luke 2: 52 – “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man. ”
The 360 Coach Mentally – Making Wise Decisions By learning the rules of their sport, young athletes are able to make wise decisions on the court and sidelines. A 360 Coach knows how to teach their sport in a way that young athletes can understand. Athletically – Improving Physical Ability One of the main reasons parents register their young athlete to play is to improve their physical ability. A 360 Coach knows how to build athletic foundations through drills that enhance skill development.
The 360 Coach Spiritually – Embracing Life’s Purpose The mission of Upward Sports is to promote the discovery of Jesus through sports. This mission is carried out by the 360 Coach, as you introduce life’s true purpose through intentional character lessons throughout the season while leading to an introduction of the Gospel message. Socially – Fostering Healthy Relationships An important part of growing as an athlete is connecting with teammates. As they enjoy time with others, they are building healthy relationships. As a 360 Coach, you should be a catalyst in encouraging this connection because it builds a socially healthy team.
Success as an Upward Coach
Preparing For Practice From Coach Playbook (receive at Jan 8 training) and at Myupward. org coach resources web site : • Explanation of different positions on the court. • Suggested skills to teach your players with a detailed description of how to properly perform each skill. • Suggested drills to help develop player’s basketball skills. • Practice plans for each practice; consider using “Coach’s Sideline” • Grade appropriate devotions to share at each practice.
Preparing for Practice outlines – one for each week 1. Warm-up activity (3 -5 minutes) – Have players participate in an activity to get warmed up while waiting for others to arrive. 2. Team meeting (3 -5 minutes) • Teach and review rules of the sport throughout the season. • Teach and review the proper techniques for each skill involved in basketball. Try to introduce no more that two skills per practice. 3. Practice skills through drills (20 -25 minutes) – Implement drills that will reinforce learning of the skills. Basic skills: - footwork, ball handling, passing, shooting, rebounding, defense
Preparing for Practice Outline (continued) 4. Team Huddle (5 -8 minutes) – Share devotion in playbook. • Prepare for object lessons – Some devotions require you to bring an object to add emphasis to the devotion. • Review the devotion prior to practice – Become familiar with the devotion. • Prepare a personal story – When players hear a personal faith story from a coach, the spiritual impact will be much deeper. • Review Scripture learning – Become familiar with the Scripture learning verse that will be shared at practice.
Preparing for Practice Outline (continued) 5. Game scenario/inter-squad drill/scrimmage (15 -20 minutes) – Game situations are a great way for players to practice skills they have been taught in practice. • Coach technique and strategy • Control the pace and stop play to teach 6. Post practice meeting (3 -5 minutes) – • Hold off court in classroom (or on court if last practice of the night) • Distribute Green Scripture learning stars and next week’s Scripture cards • Review the skills learned • Make any necessary announcements. • After practice engage in conversation with the players’ parents; ensure players depart with parents
Coach’s Sideline - Complete practice guide customized to the grade levels you coach. - Pre-practice huddle topics, warm-up activities, skills focus, skills/drills. - Grade appropriate practice devotion.
Game Format Referees lead both teams in prayer at center court before game. Home team gets ball to start game in 1 -2 nd grade divisions. Jump ball for all other divisions. In subsequent jump-ball situations, possessions will alternate. Games consist of two 18 -minute halves and an eight-minute halftime. The clock stops every six minutes for predetermined substitutions. Redistribute wrist bands. Let players on bench know ahead of time who is going in. This time should not be treated as a timeout.
Rules for Game Play Except where the rules unique to Upward apply, play is governed by the National Federation of State High School Associations’ Rules Book. Upward unique rules below. See additional HCC unique rules in handout. 1. Man-to-man defense will be played at all times. 2. Defensive players must stay within arm’s reach of the player they’re guarding. - 1 -2 grade pick up players once they cross mid-court - 3 -6 grade can wait to pick up until player crosses 3 point line
Rules for Game Play (Continued) 3. Double teaming is not allowed. However, “help defense” is strongly encouraged in the following 3 instances: • In the Lane Area – If a defender is in the lane and the player he or she is guarding is within arm’s reach, the defender is allowed to provide help defense. • Offensive Picks and Screens – Defensive switching is allowed on offensive picks and screens. The non-screened defender can help his or her teammate by temporarily switching until the teammate recovers to defend his or her offensive player. This is commonly referred to as “help and recover”. • During Fast Breaks – During any fast break (when the team that gains possession pushes quickly into the opponent’s end of the court), another defensive player not assigned to the ball handler may help in order to slow or stop the fast break. Upon stopping the fast break, defenders should return to guarding their assigned players.
Rules for Game Play (Continued) 4. At the beginning of each six-minute segment, both coaches line up players at mid-court and match them up by ability without giving verbal cues. Use wrist bands- Black, Blue, Red, Green, Yellow • If both coaches and referees foresee a match-up problem due to position and height, players can be shuffled around for better game situation. 5. Full-court presses are not allowed. Defensive players may not guard their opponents in the backcourt. No incidental back court violations will be called, however back court is not a safe zone once the half court line is crossed. 6. The offense must purposefully attack the defense – no stalling. Violation after referee warning will result in a turnover.
Rules for Game Play (Continued) 7. Referees will call and explain all violations. 8. When possible, referees will advise players of potential violations before the violation occurs. This often prevents a violation from occurring. 9. No technical fouls or protest of games. These go against the spirit of Upward Basketball. Coaches and referees should instead follow the example in the Circle of Affirmation. 10. No score will be given for a basket in the wrong goal. It will be treated as a turnover.
Rules for Game Play (Continued) 11. A player committing two fouls in one six-minute segment must sit out the remainder of that segment (except in 5 -6 grade divisions). The next player in the rotation comes in as the substitute (may require switching bands of on-court players). This does not change the normal rotation. The player who comes in as a substitute gains extra playing time. This extra time does not affect the predetermined substitution system. 12. Non-shooting fouls result in the ball being taken out on the side by the offended team (no bonus rule). All shooting fouls result in free throws (except for 1 -2 grade games where no foul shots are taken ball is taken out on the side. )
Rules for Game Play (Continued) 13. The game clock runs continuously. The following rules go into effect in the 3 -4 and 5 -6 grade division when fewer than two minutes remain in the game: • Non-shooting fouls by defense result in the offensive team getting one point and the ball. • Shooting fouls by defense result in the offensive team scoring two points. The defensive team then takes possession. • Players fouled in the act of shooting and making the basket are credited with the basket plus one point. The defensive team then takes possession. These rules exist to avoid wasting time lining players up for free throws and keeps the game moving, allowing all players more time to equally contribute.
Rules for Game Play (Continued) 14. Some key HCC rules All divisions: • Team “Gold Star” (sportsmanship) rule – To intentionally involve teammates in play, except during a fast break, teams must make one pass in the front court before taking a shot, otherwise a violation will be called and turnover results. • No overtimes 1 -2 grade divisions: • No stealing the ball from opponent while dribbling (fast breaks included); can steal passes. • No intentional screens allowed
Rules for Game Play (Continued) 3 -4 grade divisions: • No intentional screens allowed until Game #5 (encourages focus on fundamentals early in season) 5 -6 grade divisions: • Each player allowed 5 fouls per game – don’t foul out after 2 fouls in a period. Coach option to remove player.
Substitutions The Upward substitution system is designed to provide every player an equal opportunity for improvement. The substitution system ensures that: • Every child will play at least half of the game. • No child will sit out back-to-back six minute segments. • The starting lineup shifts down one player every game, allowing every child to be in the starting lineup. • In most cases, each child will play against someone of equal ability. • Coaches are not able to make unfair substitutions or to be accused of doing so. • Coaches do not have to monitor playing time for each player. • Playing time for all players is virtually even over the course of the season.
Substitutions Implementing the System • Use your team roster as basis for substitution system. • This roster contains each player’s evaluation score. Beginning with the letter A, coaches should assign each player a letter according to that player’s level of ability. This ability ranking is based on both the player’s evaluation score and the coach’s talent assessment of each player (observed during practices, Jamboree and first game). • Head coaches lock roster for season at game #2 • Players and parents must not be aware of the rankings. • Beginning Game #2, head coaches provide the scorekeeper with roster before each game
