Technology test bed t Work with partners to develop and evaluate new DCAS technologies for applications Examples: t Radiation laboratory will conduct fabrication and testing of the antenna systems t Evaluate the polarization matching and purity of the various NETRAD radars for DCAS application and improve design accordingly. t Characterize the integrated side-lobe performance for predicting performance in various terrains. t Characterize the performance of the wireless data links in intense tropical precipitation. Study the data loss as a function of rainfall rate.
UPRM Testbed – Integrating Research Ph. D, MS students at UMASS Study antennas and propagation Refurbish Lighting APL in PR Wireless telemetry Fixed/Mobile 802. 11 b testbed preparation 1 Ph. D, MS students At CSU Begin 802. 11 b and X-band propagation studies - moist environment/ Cruz atmos propagation models- complex terrain & urban areas/ Janaswamy Begin Puerto Rico microclimatology survey using Xband nodes/CSU & OU 2 Fabricate 2 lowcost X-band nodes/ work with Sekelsky - one fixed - one mobile 3 MS students Summer at UMass Develop low cost frequency scanning PCB antennas/Pozar 4 Develop low cost fixed frequency and beam PCB antenna/ Pozar QPE work Develop plan for islandwide network - consider mountainous topology = work with Paula Reese - consider flood-prone regions = work with emergency planners/Reese 5 Develop low cost multi-band scanning antennas/ work with Pozar Develop low cost solidstate/MPM precip radar prototype/ work with Sekelsky
Tropical storm/Hurricane Testbed t Develop special DCAS operations for tropical storm/hurricane environment. t A) Pre-landfall mode of operation, study approaching rainbands t B) During land-fall to study the complete microphysical structure and the associated performance of DCAS, including loss of some radars. Collaborate with Hurricane Research Center t C) Develop and validate specific QPE algorithms tuned to tropical storms in conjunction with in-situ sampling of the raindrop size distribution. t D) Conduct systematic study of storm microphysics via polarimetric radar observations for the Puerto Rico environment.
Long-term Plan • Expand campus testbed into island-wide DCAS system. • Engage National Weather Service (San Juan) • Integrate other end-users such as Emergency Management and Planning, FEMA Visualization of radar coverage of PR as a test-bed
