WRIST JOINT • Synovial ellipsoid joint • Distal end of the radius concave • Scaphoid is convex, lunate, triquetrum • Fibrous capsule attached to articular margins of bony elements • Joint cavity usually not continuous with that of the distal radio-ulnar joint • Articular disc sometimes perforated

WRIST JOINT • Joint cavity can be continuous with those of the intercarpal joints • Synovial membrane lines the non-articular elements in the joint

DORSAL Lateral to Medial 1. Abductor pollicis longus, Extensor pollicis brevis 2. Extensor carpi radialis longus, Extensor carpi radialis brevis 3. Extensor pollicis longus 4. Extensor digitorum, Extensor indicis 5. Extensor digiti minimi 6. Extensor carpi ulnaris

CARPOMETACARPAL JOINTS THUMB • Thumb = saddle joint • Articulates with trapezium • Fibrous capsule surrounds joint • Joint cavity lined by synovial membrane • Palmar, dorsal radial carpometacarpal ligaments

CARPOMETACARPAL JOINTS THUMB • Resting position – Palmar surface medial – Dorsal surface lateral • Flexion – Thumb moves medially • Extension – Thumb moves laterally • Abduction – Thumb moves ant • Adduction – Thumb towards palm • • Flexion tog with 30 degree med rot Extension tog with 30 degree lat rot

METACARPOPHALANGEAL JOINTS • Synovial condylar joint • Metacarpal with proximal phalanx • Dorsal side – Fibrous capsule replaced by extensor hood • Ventral – Palmar plate / ligament – Ant part being grooved by long flexor tendons • Lateral side – Capsule reinforced by collateral ligaments
