Gersemi – 3 operation modes: vacuum, liquid, pressurized bath Test of SC cavities & magnets (<350 k. J) • 3. 2 m x ø 1. 1 m total volume • 2. 65 m x ø 1. 1 m below lambda plate The design, incl. the joint, is based on experience from the cluster D 25 Nov 2020 Gersemi - Pepitone 5
Gersemi – Operation Cryostat tested with the liquid insert for LHC-crab cavities in Q 4 2020 Cooldown in 1 day 1. 8 K 25 Nov 2020 Gersemi - Pepitone 6
Status Good results with the liquid insert We reached 1. 8 K Possible interference between HL-LHC magnets, LHC crab cavities and cryomodules • operational all linked to same sub-atmospheric pumping system, difficult to operation more than one at 2 K, but 4 K might be possible • magnet test could magnetize environment, while cavity test requires almost zero field levels magnetic field compensation coils for cavity instead of mu-metal shield Software improvement needed to fully automatize the operation 25 Nov 2020 Gersemi - Pepitone 7

Conclusions and planning 25 Nov 2020 Gersemi - Pepitone 29
Conclusions and planning • We have now, at the University, everything to succeed. We are close to celebrate the first operation with the lambda plate of the cryostat and the first powering of a superconducting magnet • We will be ready beginning of 2021 to receive a MCBXF (4 Q) • Time will help to be more/very comfortable with the operation of Gersemi but also with the installation/deinstallation and powering of superconducting magnets • We have an obligation of acceptance testing ESS cryomodules and we must be very efficient to juggle between Gersemi (HL-LHC magnets) and Hnoss (ESS cryomodules) 25 Nov 2020 Gersemi - Pepitone 30
