What’s an Individual Development Plan (IDP)? A four-step process that graduate students and post-docs can use to: § Self-assess skills, interests, and values § Explore different career paths and determine “fit” based on ther skills, interests, and values—with faculty mentors’ guidance § Set short- and long-term goals for skill-development, career advancement, and research—with faculty mentors’ guidance § Revise and update frequently—with faculty mentors’ guidance

NIH requirement since 2014 • UD requires all graduate students and post-doctoral researchers supported by NIH funding to formulate and use IDPs to plan their academic and career goals and to facilitate conversations with their mentors about these goals. • UD also recommends that all graduate student and postdoctoral researchers formulate IDPs, regardless of their funding source. (Sample language the Research Office recommends for use in annual NIH Research Progress Performance Reports, Section B)
