What’s an Individual Development Plan (IDP)? A four-step process that graduate students and post-docs can use to: § Self-assess skills, interests, and values § Explore different career paths and determine “fit” based on ther skills, interests, and values—with faculty mentors’ guidance § Set short- and long-term goals for skill-development, career advancement, and research—with faculty mentors’ guidance § Revise and update frequently—with faculty mentors’ guidance

NIH requirement since 2014 • UD requires all graduate students and post-doctoral researchers supported by NIH funding to formulate and use IDPs to plan their academic and career goals and to facilitate conversations with their mentors about these goals. • UD also recommends that all graduate student and postdoctoral researchers formulate IDPs, regardless of their funding source.
