UIowa group – joined DUNE fall 2016 • Yasar Onel : started HEP group in 1988, was on fixed target experiments at Fermilab, SSC, and joined CMS in early 1990’s. • Jane Nachtman: joined Iowa faculty and CMS in 2007, formerly Wilson Fellow at Fermilab on CDF (trigger and DAQ). • Mary Hall Reno: phenomenologist, work on neutrino interactions • Aldo Penzo: emeritus INFN, expertise in Si. PM’s, scintillators, calorimetry • Burak Bilki: research scientist, currently at CERN on CMS upgrade, worked on CALICE

CMS Hadron Forward (HF) Calorimeters • • • Čerenkov Calorimeter – Quartz fibers ~ 250 tons iron absorber (8. 8 λ I) ~ 1000 km quartz fibers (0. 8 mm diam) ~ 2000 Photomultiplier tube (PMT) read-out 36 wedges azimuthally; 18 rings radially (Segmentation ΔηxΔφ = 0. 175 x 0. 175) [Δη ~ 0. 03, Δφ ~ 0. 03 rad] Front-end electronics racks PMT Boxes 5
CMS Forward Hadronic Calorimeter • Iowa was a leading institution for the CMS HF calorimeter design, construction, installation and commissioning. • Many components were built in Iowa machine shops

HF PMT testing at Iowa • 3 dark boxes • VME and CAMAC DAQ systems • Computer controlled XY scanner and n. d. f. wheels • 3 picoammeters • 3 digital scopes • UV and visible power meters • UV and Blue LED light source • 2 nitrogen lasers • Nitrogen Dye Laser • 2 dark boxes has DC light source (tungsten light bulbs) • Optical table with all mounts and stands • Pico second LED pulsers and 1 double pulse generator 2000 PMT’s characterized at Iowa for initial CMS HF, and 2000 PMT’s for upgraded HF m g
Timing tests include rise time, pulse width, transit time spread. They are all done via visual basic code run by digital scope

Summary The Iowa group has many years of experience in building, commissioning detectors • Especially photodetectors : PMT’s and Si. PM’s, new scintillators and wavelength-shifting materials • Resources at Iowa include NASA-certified machine shops, electronics shops, engineering support • Our group is currently finishing commissioning of HF Phase I upgrade at CERN (our engineer Ianos Schmidt is Integration coordinator, RS Burak Bilki working on HF integration and commissioning, graduate students writing monitoring software) We are excited to be a part of the DUNE Photon Detection consortium!
