CLASSIFICATION OF TEXT What is text ? Text is any piece of writing. It can be letter, an email, a novel, poem, a recipe, a note, instruction, an article in a newspaper of magazine, writing on a web page. All of these examples can be called texts. The following types of the texts are generally seen in our syllabus – 1. Expository text 2. Narrative text 3. Transactional text 4. Reflexive text 5. Argumentative text
§ Expository Text There are certain texts which are written to convey particular massage to its reader. These are called expository text. While writing such text, certain story is selected or chosen. The composer gets abundant scope to convey the principle message of the text to the reader. It contains descriptive passages. The message is highly valued here. It is written with the indirect reflection of the writer. Things or events are describe in direct way. No complication is intentionally brought in. The language of this type of text is alwayes simple and lucid here statement is clear. Writer aims to win the mind of the reader at the first stroke. Examples : a) Text books b) News paper articles c) Tour guide book and so on
§ Narrative text: Narration is one of the four modes of prose discourse. It simply means “ telling of a story”. This type of text is an account of a real or imagined events or stories. So narrative is a sequencing of events and happenings were something is said to some one. There must be at least two persons– narrator and narratee or a speaker and a listener. A narrative has a structure that is temporal. This text conveys an experience, either real or imaginary. It must be informative, persuasive or entertaining. From this point of view we may cite the examples of the narrative texts: ballad, fable, myth, fairy tale, short story, poetry (long narrative poetry, personal account, cartoons etc. the main purposes of this type of texts are: Ø To entertain or amuse, ØTo inform ØTo decribe ØTo report and reflect • Examples of this type of text: novel , short story , stone
§ Transactional text: This type of text never amis to deliver a story. This text is based on communication between the writer and the reader. The aim of this type of text is to transmit information from one person to others. This text is very important in the Competence – based Curriculum followed in the USA. At present english teaching is not them based or genre- based. The current practict is to give more emphasis on the students language competence which helps them survive in mordern life. It provides them a life skill for survival. The chief contents of this type of text are questions, answers, time line , flowchart, map , digrame, advice etc. Examples: a) Government’s manual b) Knowledge text c) Memorandum of organization
§ Reflexive text: Reflexive text is based on event. Writer himself describes an event of life which is deeply rooted in subjective details. The story which is already subjectively told leaves a lasting impression in the mind of the writer. It equally strikes the mind of the reader which subjective appeal. This type of text is always written in lucid an colloquial language. There is found mostly touchy descriptions. Examples : a) Auto biography b) Memoirs c) Auto biographical memoirs
§Argumentative text: This type of text refers to a series of statements intended to establish a position or prove a point. So this text is a text where the writer takes a point of view and supports it. § Importance of different texts : Different types of text are selected in a curriculum and this selection is very crucial from pedagogic point of view. First , varieties of text offer some freedom of choice for learners. Second, these texts offer variety of topics, of length of texts, of rhetorical organizations and of reading purposes. However it very difficult to fine authentic texts for children especially in second language. For that purpose , texts are adapted, simplified and graded for L 2 learners.
