Glass is an amorphous solid and transparent material that is used in numerous applications in our daily lives. Glass is made from natural materials (sand, soda ash and limestone) that are melted at very high temperature to form a new material: glass. At high temperature------ liquid At ambient temperature------ solid It can be molded into a lot of shapes. It has widespread practical, technological, and decorative usage Glass has become a popular construction material, and It is replacing walls and doors.
Glass in history The Glass manufacturing has an age-old tradition dating from around 3500 BC in Egypt and Mesopotamia to be used as jewelry. The number of glass types and applications have multiplied. 1874: Tempered glass is developed by Alfred Royer , in France
Properties • The Glass can be molded into many forms. • It erodes very slowly. • It can withstand the action of water. • It is resistant to chemical attack. • The glass is more corrosion resistant than other materials. • It has a tensile strength. • It reflects, bends, transmits and absorbs light. • It surface is hard and elastic.
