GENERAL OBJECTIVE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE SPREADING OF INSTITUTIONAL, ACADEMIC AND ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION OF UMSA THROUGH TRANSLATION FROM SPANISH TO ENGLISH

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES To translate the UMSA information from Spanish to English applying all the appropriate translation techniques. To contribute to the creation of an important tool in order to provide students, university teachers and people in general with the information related to Universidad Mayor de San Andrés inside the country and abroad. To apply all the acquired knowledge about translation in developing the web site of UMSA.

LIMITATION OF THE WORK Ø The GUIDED WORK was carried out in La Paz city in the UMSATIC program facilities located at Laws and Political Sciences Faculty. Ø The translation work involved all the academic, administrative and institutional available information that was assigned to each participant by the coordinator of the Umsatic program. All the guided work was developed over eight months. SCOPE OF THE WORK This guided work will contribute to the spreading of the UMSA information in the English language which is spoken at a worldwide level.

UMSATIC OBJECTIVES Ø To provide UMSA with the technological resources necessary to improve and optimize the main processes within the University. Ø To provide university teachers and students with Information Systems, Intranet and Internet Services to achieve high academic research and administrative processes.

UMSATIC OBJECTIVES Ø To train personnel to implement, develop, manage and support The UMSATIC Program. Ø To help the generation and flow of information into the University. Ø To expand the dissemination of research and development results.

In order to avoid problems the alternative was rejected and the search for other building continued.

METHODOLOGY THRID STAGE EXAMPLES OF THE TRANSLATION PROBLEMS HISTORIA INSTITUCIONAL DE LA UNIVERSIDAD TEXTO EN ESPAÑOL Instituto Normal Superior creado el año 1917, habiendo existido antes, por poco tiempo, el Colegio Nacional de Ciencias destinado a educar profesores. El primer director de este Colegio fue don José Joaquin Mora, a cuya ausencia desapareció el Colegio. El Instituto creado en 1917 contó con cuatro secciones: Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas, Ciencias Naturales y Química, Historia y Geografía, Filosofía y Letras y subsistió hasta la época de la semiautonomía universitaria en que fue radicalmente suprimido.

METHODOLOGY FIRST TRANSLATION Superior Normal Institute created in 1917, having existed before, just for a short period of time, the National School of Sciences destined to educate teachers. The first director of this School was Mr. Jose Joaquin Mora and when he left it the school disappeared. The Institute created in 1917 had four sections: Physics and Mathematics sciences, Natural and Chemistry Science, History and Geography, Philosophy and Letters. It subsisted until semiautonomy of the university when it was radically suppressed.

METHODOLOGY FINAL TRANSLATION The National School of Sciences oriented to train teachers disappeared when its first head Mr. José Joaquin Mora left it. The “Instituto Normal Superior” created in 1917 which already existed for a short period of time with four areas of studies: Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Natural and Chemical Sciences, History and Geography, Philosophy and Letters that worked until the university semi-autonomy, period in which was banned completely.

En momentos en que escribimos estas líneas (septiembre de 1948) se están inaugurando los cursos en ese monumental edificio y se está procediendo a la demolición de las antiguas edificaciones que dan sobre la Avenida Villazón. FIRST TRANSALTION The main building that has 17 floors was opened on July 1947. In the moment that we write these lines (September 1948) the classrooms are being inaugurated in that enormous building and at the same time it is being demolished the old building that is on Villazón Avenue.

METHODOLOGY FINAL TRANSALTION The 13 floors Monoblock building was finished on July 1947. And in September 1948 the classrooms of this monumental building were inaugurated and at the same time the old facilities located at Villazón Avenue were demolished.

CONCLUSIONS Ø All the work objectives have been reached. Ø The translation work was carried out according to the parameters that were established not only by the Umsatic Program but also by the coordinator of the Linguistics Department. Ø The assigned Documents were translated into the English language. Ø The guided work was developed according to the schedule proposed by the Umsatic Program.

CONCLUSIONS Ø The web site of Universidad Mayor the San Andrés published the institutional, administrative and academic information in the English Language Ø The spread of information in the English language allows us to reach a worldwide audience. Ø During the three stages of the guided work all the translation work was supervised and reviewed by the responsible coordinators.

RECOMMENDATIONS UMSATIC PROGRAM Ø Provide participants with more computing equipment. Ø Out fit a facility according to the participants requirements. Ø Review and Select the information previously to be delivered to the participants. Ø Look for a group of editors for the Spanish documentation

RECOMMENDATIONS LINGUISTICS DEPARTMENT Ø Look for inter-institutional agreements through which under-graduate students could put into practice all of their acquired knowledge. Ø Organize courses and update workshops regarding translation. Ø Allow students to use all the available translation material. Ø Continue with this graduating mode.

RECOMMENDATIONS LINGUISTICS DEPARTMENT Ø Keep on working with Umsatic program to make possible the graduation of new groups of students. Ø Make possible the participation of postulants from different areas such as Spanish and French.
