History ● ● Universal Music Group began in 1962 when US-based MCA Inc merged with American Decca started off as a British company but then branched out to America. MCA, now known as Universal Pictures, owned a music division as well as a movie company, But was later sold to Japan's Matsushita Electric for $6. 59 bn in November 1990. The US Decca label was the foundation company that evolved into UMG (Universal Music Group).
