Stepping into UDL Why Use Ed. Ready
HISTORY • Dec 1, 2016 – Compass Ends • New Accuplacer contract would not be in place until after start of Spring 2017 semester • Large number of students wait until near the start of semester to do their placement testing • Chattanooga State (Ch. SCC) already used Ed. Ready MATH for ACT and Compass Prep • Results from Ed. Ready Placement Pilot
Ed. Ready Placement Goals Units 1 -5 Units 6 -10 Units 1 -6 Units 7 -15 Units 16 -19
Ed. Ready English Placement Format Unit 1 – Intro to College Reading & Writing Completion of T 1 with target score of 75 allows entry to Test 1 Co-Requisite ENGLISH + College Level Unit 2 – Identifying Main Ideas Unit 3 – Discovering Implied Meaning Unit 4 – Interpreting Bias Unit 5 – Analysis through Definition Unit 6 – Learning Across Disciplines Test 2 Completion of T 1 and T 2 with target scores of 75 allows entry to College Level ENGLISH Unit 7 – Exploring Comparative Elements Unit 8 – Informed opinions through Causal Chains Unit 9 – Applied Critical Analysis Unit 10 – Using Sources in Critical Reading & Writing
Why Multiple Ed. Ready Diagnostics? • Distinguish between requirements for: • Co-Requisite • College Level • Higher Level Math • Allow students to realize early success • Ensure greater understanding through smaller unit groups
English 1010 Co-requisite • Why 10 % Points Difference FAIL / Pass Class - 309 / Ed. Ready - 36 70% 60% 53% 47% 50% 40% • Removed from Data 63% • Problem 37% 30% 20% 10% 0% CLASS Ed. Ready • Withdraws (W) • Academic Fail (FA) Fail 37% 47% Pass 63% 53% • Pass – the successful student • Without (W) and (FA) what does Fail mean? • How to identify students who enroll and begin a class but then drop out?
English 1010 Co-requisite (Including W and FA) NOT Successful / Successful • Class Group • 118 students had a W or FA • 28% of the class were NOT successful and NOT included in the FAIL data Class – 427 / Ed. Ready 36 54% 53% 52% • How important is a 28% drop out rate? 51% 50% 49% • Ed. Ready Group • No students had a W or FA 48% 47% 46% 45% • WHY the difference? 44% CLASS Ed. Ready Fail 48% 47% Pass 52% 53%

Lesson Learned 1. Ed. Ready English Test 1 cut off score was too low • Only made a significant difference for Co-requisite English • Changed to be same level as English Test 2 - 75 2. Ed. Ready Students less likely to withdraw (W) or stop attending class (FA) 1. Highest W / FA for all courses 1. Ed. Ready – 5% 2. Class Range – 15% to 28%
