UNITY Ways to achieve Unity in Art

Unity • The look and feel of wholeness or oneness in a work of art. • In works of art, the elements and principles work together to show completeness. • A successful composition displays unity.

Unity… • can be thought of in terms of a basketball team. • In unity, each element and principle is put together to work towards a common goal of completeness.

Elements and Principles we are working with to show Unity • Emphasis: focus • Rhythm: repetition of colors, shapes, or lines; works together with movement • Balance: distribution of visual weight • Color- product of light (Ex: you can’t see a red shirt in the dark; complementary colors- opposite on color wheel; Triadic colors; Warm and cool colors) • Line- created by the movement of a tool and pigment • Shape- area contained within an implied line

Ways to achieve Unity in Art • Keep the following ideas in mind when trying to show unity in your mixed media artwork.

Clustering… • elements or by placing them close together, visual unity can be developed.

Overall surface treatment… • that is similar creates a strong sense of unity.

Intense colors, repeated shapes, and hard edges… • create unity.

A dominant color… • will unify a painting. • Background

Lines… • can show unity. • The varied distance between lines create the lighter and darker values.

Repeating similar shapes and colors… • throughout a composition unifies the piece.

Dominant values… • create unity. This could be either a light, middle or dark value.

Similar texture… • unifies the painting.

The bottom line… Unity as everything in the picture flowing together. There is cohesion and it looks like a whole. It’s important to keep things similarrepeat colors, pictures, lines, etc. You will set yourself up for success with a good composition (rule of thirds)!
