United States History SSUSH 1 – Compare and contrast the development of English Colonization during the 17 th century A. Investigate how mercantilism and trans-Atlantic trade led to the development of colonies
England before the 1500’s • Most of the population lived, farmed and died with in 2 miles of where they were born. • Basics of life were wool clothes, bread, water, roasted meat and root vegetables • Only very wealthy people had spices (other than salt), wore clothes of cotton or silk, and drank anything other than water.
The Beginning of Colonization • The demand for goods began to increase with industrialization, city life, and a developing middle class • Spain and Portugal were exploring the ocean trying to get rich by finding a shortcut to Asia • They didn’t find the shortcut but did find…. Central and South Africa and the America’s
The world in the 1400’s
Compared to the world we know
Early Colonization • It's a race between Spain and Portugal to see who can get to Asia 1 st. • They want: porcelain, silk, tea, spices, jade, cotton, etc.
Early Colonization • Spain focused on South America – Lots of gold and silver – Buy whatever they want – Native American population destroyed by disease
Early Colonization • Portugal focused on Africa – They didn’t find gold or silver – But they did find a population that did not catch European diseases (they had immunity) – Portugal began selling Africans to Spain to use in the America's to replace the dying native American labor force
The Columbian Exchange
England comes in • They explored North America • They didn’t find gold, silver, or people to enslave. • But they did find a wide open land with helpful natives, good farming, and large harbors
England establishes colonies • England was growing quickly, and they had a large population of people that caused the Government problems • Mostly people seeking religious freedom, but others who wanted opportunities denied them, and others who were minor criminals (like debtors) • England established colonies for these groups of people with “Royal Charters”
England establishes colonies • The colonies were established these people could go and set up new lives in America • These people would produce raw materials for England’s factories and then buy the finished goods. • The colonists could only buy the goods from England, and England would raise the price. • This idea is what is known as “Mercantilism”
