Unit: Mesopotamia and River Valley Civilizations Boys and girls we just learned that Mesopotamia was the FIRST CIVILIZATION to ever be created Did people live along the banks of the two rivers? (Tigris & Euphrates) No! Flooding would have destroyed their houses! This led to the development of the irrigation system

WHY IRRIGATION? ? ? • • Depending on the time of year, the region could receive little rain or excessive rain. When there was little rain crops dried up. When there were floods, crops were destroyed, animals killed and homes washed away. Man was forced to find a solution Irrigation became the farming technique that led to the growth of cities in Ancient Mesopotamia.
VOCABULARY Irrigation – a way of supplying water to an area of land Canals – human-made waterways, that connected basins to a network of ditches. Surplus of Food – more than needed Division of Labor – the type of arrangement in which each worker specializes in a particular task or job
