Bell work The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship. Since that time, more than 182, 000 Peace Corps Volunteers have been invited by 138 host countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation. Today’s Peace Corps is more vital than ever, working in emerging and essential areas such as information technology and business development, and committing more than 1, 000 new Volunteers as a part of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Peace Corps Volunteers continue to help countless individuals who want to build a better life for themselves, their children, and their communities.
Author’s Word Choice • Connotation- the feeling or emotions associated with a word (common meaning) • Denotation- means the specific or literal dictionary definition of a word (dictionary meaning) • Example: – I bought my hair from a cheap hair store. – I bought my hair from an inexpensive hair store. – What is the difference between the two sentences?
Remember this. . • The connotation of a word can be positive, negative, or neutral. – Positive– Negative– Neutral- does not change • • Some of the monkeys made _____ faces. a) hilarious b) amusing c) happy
Don’t Forget • That an author’s word choice can be formal or informal. • Formal- is often used in speeches, in academic and business writing, or when talking to a respected person. • Informal- is EVERYDAY LANGAUAGE. Informal language can be slang.
A few examples… • Hey, wat it do shorty! • Hello, how are you doing today? • Hi Stephanie. How’s it going?
One last thing. . • The author’s word choice, which is DICTION can effect the author’s purpose. • Authors always have a general reason for writing, such as to explain, to entertain, to inform, BUT authors also have reasons for using specific words, phrases, or even titles.
Let’s look at this quote…. “The purpose of education is to create in a person the ability to look at the world for himself, to make his own decisions, to say to himself this is black or this is white, to decide for himself whethere is a God in heaven or not. To ask questions of the universe, and then to live with those questions, is the way he achieves his own identity. ” -James Baldwin
