Writing Notice A notice is a formal means of communication. • Purposes: announce or display information to a specific group of people.
• Format Ø the name of the organisation issuing the notice Ø the title "NOTICE" Ø a heading to introduce the subject of the notice Ø the date Ø the body of the notice Ø the writer's signature, name (in block letters), and designation • Points to remember (in teaching notes)
Writing Note • Notices Ø Not addressed to anyone in particular Ø Formal style Ø No contractions Ø No ellipsis Ø No abbreviations
• Memo Ø Addressed to groups or individuals ØMore formal status than a note ØFormal style, no abbreviations ØNo omission of words ØFormal style of address, use of job titles
• Note Ø Addressed to an individual ØInformal, short abbreviations (tel. no) ØContractions (you're) ØOmission of subjects, auxiliaries and articles ØUse of first names
• Types of Note business notes: Business notes can include memos, brief instructions or thank-you notes personal notes: include notes sent with a gift, or thank-you notes for a gift or act of kindness
• Features of Note The types of wording used for these features varies widely with the type of note and the formality. business notes, begin with "dear" or "to" and the name of a person or organization personal notes, use the person's first name or nickname Couples with terms of endearment such as "my darling wife" The conclusion should match the beginning in formality, and may include a sign-off phrase.
