Writing: Informative/Explanatory Mrs. Eberhardt tells Roy, "Honey, sometimes you're going to be faced with situations where the line isn't clear between what's right and what's wrong. Your heart will tell you to do one thing, and your brain will tell you to do something different. In the end, all that's left is to look at both sides and go with your best judgment. " Discuss incidents where Roy's heart tells him one thing, his heart another. Carl Hiaasen writes about the different members of Roy’s family and Beatrice/Mullet Fingers' family. What were the differences between the two families? What influence do you think the characters' families had on their actions? In Hoot, Roy changes his mind about living in Florida. Discuss how Hiaasen’s personal experiences with nature and living in Florida, resulted in the novels he writes. Why do you believe he will continue to write novels based in Florida/ (Quote from book)…. After reading 2 short stories, _____and _______ examine the texts to determine how both authors conveyed the similar theme. Discuss how theme is approached differently by each author. What character traits did each protagonist need to develop in order to achieve their own identity? You must include evidence from both texts in your essay. In all of the texts that you have read thus far, the characters have demonstrated the necessary traits needed to persevere and to overcome life’s obstacles. Analyze the poems _____by______ and _______by____. Discuss how both of these authors present theme of what is needed to become a man and to be successful in life. Cite evidence from both texts. Narrative Research: In the story Hoot, Roy becomes involved with saving the owls at first, to gain acceptance by his friends. As the story progresses, Roy becomes motivated to save the owls because he feels that is the right thing to do. Motivation is what will help Roy solve the problem. Everyone needs motivation to help them through difficult times. Think about the positive things in your life that motivate you. Are these things intrinsic or extrinsic? Could negative experiences motivate you as well? Convey an experience when you had to motivate yourself to do something you did not think you could do. Include flashbacks in your narrative. Narrative Research: Roy’s success in saving the burrowing owls from certain demise was a turning point in Roy’s life and how he feels about Florida. Think of some successes you have had in your own life (school, family, friends, etc. ) Describe some of those successes and how they made you feel. What events or attitudes led to those successes? How have your personal successes influenced you in times of uncertainty?
