The Cold War • As World War 2 ended, a huge distrust grew between the US and the Soviet Union. This distrust caused a growing tension that led to a period of time called the Cold War.
• Communist governments were created by the Soviet Union in all of the Eastern European countries. Winston Churchill referred to this as the “Iron Curtain”.
• To counter the growing threat by the Soviet Union, the US adopted a policy of containment. The US vowed to oppose the spread of communism in the world.
• President Truman also declared that the US would support any nation that was resisting takeover by “armed minorities or outside pressures”. This was known as the Truman Doctrine.
• To help rebuild Europe, Congress passed the Marshall Plan. This plan gave money to any nation as long as they removed trade barriers and cooperated economically with each other.
Activity • Why would it be beneficial to the United States to give away over $12 billion to rebuild Europe? Think back to the lecture and which countries received the money. (1 paragraph) • After World War 2, the US said that they would contain communism and not let it spread throughout the world. Is this possible; is it possible to contain communism? (1 paragraph)
