Opening up 1 Work in pairs and discuss how you prefer to communicate on the following occasions? Explain your reasons. • Keeping in contact with friends In keeping contact with my friends, I prefer to use instant messengers, like QQ or We. Chat, because they are instant and convenient. I can keep in contact with my friends anytime, anywhere as long as we are online. • Keeping in contact with parents To contact my parents, I still like the traditional telephone because it’s easy to use for my parents.

Opening up 1 Work in pairs and discuss how you prefer to communicate on the following occasions? Explain your reasons. • Making a formal complaint When making a formal complaint, I would prefer to use emails or traditional letters because they seem more formal and may draw more attention from the top level of management. • Getting a train ticket To get a train ticket, I prefer to use the website to search for relevant information and buy the ticket online. It’s quite convenient and simple nowadays, compared to the past when you had to go to the train station to buy a ticket in person.

Opening up 1 Work in pairs and discuss how you prefer to communicate on the following occasions? Explain your reasons. • Confessing your love to a boy / girl When I have to confess my love to a boy / girl, I would rather choose texting or instant messengers because that could save me from the possible embarrassment if I get a “No” after a face-to-face confession of love. • Giving opinions on social issues I prefer to post my opinions on some microblogs or forums so that I can exchange ideas with anyone who is concerned with social issues.

Listening to the world 6 Work in groups and discuss the questions. 1 Has modern technology helped us to communicate better? l l Yes. Many years ago, communication could take days or even months and was very inconvenient. Now we can communicate with each other anytime, anywhere. We can even see each other with the help of webcams no matter how far we are from each other. No. The improvement of ways of communication doesn’t truly enhance the mutual understanding of people. What’s more, people tend to reject face-to-face communication because of the convenience of modern ways of communication. I think that will probably bring more difficult problems.

Listening to the world 6 Work in groups and discuss the questions. 2 Have you had similar problems with modern communication as the speakers? What’s the worst problem you’ve had? Yes. I wanted to send a text message to my girlfriend the other day, but accidentally selected the name of a friend from the contact list in my mobile phone. That’s really embarrassing. The worst problem I’ve had happened a month ago when I was asked by my parents to go to the airport to meet a family relative. We had never met before and we solely contacted each other through mobile phones. The awful moment came when my mobile phone ran out of power just several minutes before his flight arrived.

Listening to the world Listening skills Additional Notes Listening for speaker’s prediction Apart from tips introduced in the Student’s Book we can also try to detect the speaker’s certainty of his / her prediction using the following strategies: 1) identify modal verbs One of the functions of modal verbs is to do with degrees of certainty: They can be used to indicate whether a prediction is certain, probable, possible or impossible. For example: I will be working on this report this afternoon. (certain) I should be working on this report this afternoon. (probable) I may be working on this report this afternoon. (possible) I might be working on this report this afternoon. (almost impossible)

As the name suggests, hesitation devices indicate that the speaker is hesitant and uncertain about what he / she is saying. For example: Well, I think you will understand that, um, there is nothing the department can do, er, for you.

Listening to the world Listening skills Additional Notes 3) Other words There also many other words, phrases and expressions that the speaker can use in his / her predictions to show certain he / she is, such as certainly, definitely, probably, possibly, it seems like, perhaps, kind of, sort of, etc. For example: Don’t worry. I will certainly go to the party next week. People will definitely work shorter hours in the future. I guess you will probably enjoy this film. It seems like she could pass the final exam. I guess that’s what it’s called, it’s kind of pinkish. I will go back to work sort of next week.

Listening to the world After you listen 5 Work in pairs and discuss the questions. 1 What do you think of the ways of communication in the past, the present, and the future? In the past, people communicated with each other mainly through mails. It was very difficult for people to communicate with each other. After the invention of telephone and fax, people communicate with each other much more easily than before. The emergence of the computer, as well as the Internet, has brought people into a new era of communication. In the future, I think communication will be more convenient. In addition to sharing information anytime, anywhere, people may even exchange messages directly through brainwaves.

First, I think online learning will be more widely accepted in the next decade. The online learning environment will be more attractive and can enable learners to communicate with the outside world simultaneously. Second, I think the way of learning will be improved with the development of communication technology. Learners will not be taught by teachers any more, but trying to construct their own knowledge and skills with the help of online content and tools. In the distant future, I believe that communication technology can even make it possible to transfer knowledge and skills into human brains to greatly shorten the learning process.

Speaking for communication Reference speech The nominees of this year all have demonstrated remarkable creativity and admirable passion in their pursuit of science and innovation. I’m proud to have been included as one amongst them. I am deeply grateful to Prof. Wang Lihan in the School of Material Sciences and Engineering. It was a small project I did for his introductory course on biomaterials that ultimately led me onto the path toward this honor. His lectures sparked my interest in playing with common materials, making me wonder whether I could make any new and special use of them. He continued to give me invaluable advice throughout my work on this little invention. So thank you, Prof. Wang, for your wonderful lectures and inspiring words. To be continued

Speaking for communication Reference speech Thomas Edison once said, “To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk. ” To me, earning this award means that I will continue to strive to turn what may seem ordinary and valueless to something that can make our life better. I will do this with good imagination, new technology, and hard work. What I have achieved so far is just one of the numerous possible ways for us to build a beautiful city by affordable means. I hope my invention can trigger smarter ideas and I myself can do better too in the future, so I might be more worthy of tonight’s honor. Again, thank you so much. Thank you.
