Unit 7 Review Mrs. Buffington

Scientists recently discovered that rocks collected from the Franklin Mountains in West Texas and rocks collected from mountains in eastern Antarctica were exactly the same age. Further research showed that the rocks were chemically and geologically the same and came from the same magma source. This discovery provides evidence of — • A. coastal erosion • B. plate tectonics • C. ocean currents • D. glacial melting

Eighth graders have been studying about theory of plate tectonics. Of the following statements, which ones would be the BEST conclusion to the lesson? 1) There are small amounts of movement at the plates' edges 2) There is no geologic activity located at the plates' edges 3) Geologic activity causes stress to build and storage of energy at the edges 4) Geologic stress and stored energy is released as earthquakes at the edges • A. 1 and 4 • B. 2 and 3 • C. 1 and 3 • D. 3 and 4

The diagram below models two tectonic plates sliding past one another. This type of plate movement is common with oceanic plates. As the plates push against one another, pressure builds up in the form of tension. All of the tension is released when the plates begin to move. Which force is responsible for the plate movement? UNBALANCED

Which scientist is credited for first proposing Continental Drift Theory? • A. Albert Einstein • B. Alfred Wegner • C. Harry Hess • D. Abraham Ortelius

At a transform boundary, earthquakes are produced from two plates sliding past each other. The pressure that builds up from these plates is an example of • A. kinetic energy • B. potential energy • C. gravity • D. inertia

• Earth’s magnetic field has North and South poles that have reversed themselves many times in the past. • These reversals are recorded in rocks forming along mid-ocean ridges. These facts most closely correlate to which of the following Scientific Theories? • A. Continental Drift as proposed by Alfred Wegener • B. Seafloor Spreading as proposed by Harry Hess • C. Plate Tectonics as proposed by Marie Curie • D. Aurora Borealis as proposed by Robert Peary

Henry Hess' seafloor spreading hypothesis suggests that new ocean crust is added at long ridges of volcanic vents, pushing older crust to each side. Hess' hypothesis provides supporting evidence for what Theory? • A. Atomic Theory • B. Big Bang Theory • C. Theory of Continental Drift • D. Theory of General Relativity

Which of the following statements cannot be explained by the following diagram? • A. Rocks on the seafloor are aligned according to magnetic field orientation. • B. Rocks on the seafloor are younger than rocks found on land. • C. Younger rocks are found closest to seafloor trenches. • D. Rocks found on the ocean floor are all approximately the same age.

Alfred Wegner's "Continental Drift" hypothesis was not accepted until four decades after his death. What was the main reason the scientific world was reluctant to accept his hypothesis? • A. Wegner was not a geologist and so was not respected. • B. Scientists did not have the ability to date rocks and fossils. • C. Wegner could not explain how the continental plates moved. • D. Oceans were too deep for scientists to accurately prove seafloor spreading.

What are Convergent Boundaries? • A. Boundaries that rub together and slide past each other • B. Boundaries that come together • C. Boundaries that spread apart

What are Divergent Boundaries? • A. When plates come together • B. When plates divide • C. When plates rub against each other causing earthquakes

What are Transform Boundaries? • A. When plates come together • B. When plates divide • C. When plates rub against each other causing earthquakes
