Unit 7 Energy Bell Ringer You are on

Unit 7: Energy. Bell Ringer: You are on a roller coaster 92 meters above the ground traveling at 14 m/s. You weigh 400 N (or approximately 40. 8 kg). What is your mechanical energy? Show your work and include your units!

Unit 7: Energy Types and Transformations. REVIEW 1. Where would you find the most potential energy on a roller coaster? 2. Where would you find the most kinetic energy on a roller coaster? 3. What type of energy transformation is taking place when a roller coaster goes down a hill? __________

Unit 7: Energy Types and Transformations. Types of Energy • • • Mechanical Electromagnetic Electrical Chemical Thermal Nuclear

Unit 7: Energy Types and Transformations.

Unit 7: Energy Types and Transformations. Mechanical Energy – Sound • Energy transmitted through the compression of matter • Mechanical energy because it is in moving waves • Examples: Hearing music from a radio, thunder

Unit 7: Energy Types and Transformations. Thermal Energy (Heat) The heat energy of an object determines how active its atoms and molecules are. A hot object is one whose atoms and molecules are excited and show rapid movement. A cooler object's molecules and atoms will show less movement.

Unit 7: Energy Types and Transformations. Chemical Energy that is available for release from chemical reactions. The chemical bonds in a match stick store energy that is transformed into thermal energy (fire) when the match is struck.

Unit 7: Energy Types and Transformations. Chemical Energy

Unit 7: Energy Types and Transformations. Radiant Energy (Light / Electromagnet) Involves all energy found within electromagnetic spectrum. These types of energy travel in waves. These waves have electrical properties and magnetic properties.

Unit 7: Energy Types and Transformations. Radiant Energy (Light / Electromagnet) Electromagnetic Spectrum

Unit 7: Energy Types and Transformations. Electrical Energy caused by the movement of electrons. Easily transported through power lines and converted into other forms of energy. Most common energy type throughout U. S. households.

Unit 7: Energy Types and Transformations. Nuclear Energy A type of potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom and released as nuclear reactions. These reactions releases tremendous amounts of energy. Types of Nuclear Energy: —Nuclear fission reaction: nucleus splits —Nuclear fusion reaction: nuclei fuse or join together
