Tractors are Powerful Machines Get ‘er done!
Tractor Hook-Up Parts Hydraulic Plugs 3 -Point Hook-Up PTO Shaft Drawbar
THE DRAWBAR o o o Designed to pull loads Adjust to the correct height to ensure safe towing Position so the PTO shaft is straight http: //www. four-h. purdue. edu/tractor_safety/
2 TYPES #1 - Stationary Extends backward or forward o Two or three positions possible with pin movement o o Must be adjusted to PTO http: //www. four-h. purdue. edu/tractor_safety/
2 TYPES continued #2 - Swinging o o o Swings in direction tractor turns. Must be secured in fixed position to travel on the road or when using PTO. Can be locked in position to be used as a fixed type. http: //www. four-h. purdue. edu/tractor_safety/
Drawbar Safety o o o Must adjust for PTO use ONLY attach to drawbar, 2 -point, or 3 -point hitch if pulling load (Never to any other part). Raising height of bar excessively can cause overturn http: //www. four-h. purdue. edu/tractor_safety/
Proper Hitching Procedures: o o o Back tractor slowly into place. Place tractor into neutral and engage brake before dismounting. Connect directly behind tractor. Use lynch pin or hitch pin for locking, along w/ cotter pin or clip. Always hitch your own tractor. Hitch Pin www. johnnyproducts. com Lynch Pin www. hollywoodracks. com
THREE POINT HITCH PARTS: Top Link Two Lower Draft Links http: //www. four-h. purdue. edu/tractor_safety/
Benefits of 3 -Point Hitch o Easy adjustment of load with control levers. o Level implement laterally. o Adjust implement pitch. o Most hitches equipped with sway blocks to restrict side-to-side motion.
Hitching Safety o o NEVER work under a raised implement. NEVER depend on a hydraulic valve for your safety. o Place supports under implement. o Stop and shut down tractor before performing maintenance. o Be aware of location of others.
How many different categories of Three. Point hitches are there? o Difference between categories is by size. Category I II IV Max. Drawbar Power 20 -45 hp 40 -100 hp 80 -225 hp 180 -400 hp (This is on the test…)
Quick Attachment Couplers o o o Used for fast connection and release of implements. Make sure you hook hitch pins uniformly. Check coupler for proper locking, cracks and wear.
Power Take-Off (PTO) www. acs. aone. net
3 Types: o o Continuous Running - operates when master clutch is engaged Independent - transmission and PTO powered through separate clutches -PTO will still run when tractor is stopped or in motion o Transmission Driven - PTO runs only when tractor is in motion
PTO & Drawbar Height Requirements Type PTO Speed Shaft Size #Teeth on PTO Height Continuous 540 r. p. m. 1 3/8” 6 14”* Independent 1000 r. p. m. 1 3/8” 21 16”* Transmission 1000 r. p. m. 1 ¾” 20 20”* *+/- 2”
PTO Safety o o o Many accidents occur because of PTO NEVER attempt to remove anything from PTO while it is in motion. A tractor engine should always be shut off before leaving the operators seat to perform any adjustment, lubrication, or cleanout of implement www. osh. dol. govt
PTO Shields o o Developed to make tractor PTO operation safer. Shields should always be kept in place when machine is running.
PTO Shield Types o Master – prevent contact with PTO stub shaft o Stub shaft guard – enclose stub shaft when not being used o Tunnel Shield – attaches to master shield
PTO Shields Types (cont. ) o Integral-journal Shield – completely encloses PTO shaft and rotates with shaft o Fully shielded power shaft (1972) - completely covers universal joints and PTO shaft coupler
What should you do ifo When working on someone’s farm and the boss tells you to use a piece of machinery, but the PTO shaft guard is missing. What should you do? 1. 2. 3. A- Perform the task without saying anything B- Wrap the shaft in duct tape, because duct tape fixes everything! C- Talk to your adult supervisor about the missing shield and tell them the shield needs to be put on before doing the assigned task.
HYDRAULICS o o Provides power for steering, brakes, lifting, and powering equipment Uses tractor engine to operate hydraulic systems
Hydraulics Safety o o Check for leaks using a card as shown. NEVER USE HAND OR FINGERS! Escaping hydraulic under extreme pressure Can penetrate the skin causing serious injury.
REMOTE HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS o o o Single Acting - One pressure line Double Acting -Two pressure lines - Driven by the tractors hydraulic pump Flow adjustment possible
Hand Signals Why do we use them? Accidents frequently occur due to…… o Equipment being loud o Can not hear each other o Universal communication
Slow it down – decrease speed Raise equipment This far to go Move out – Take off Follow Me http: //www. four-h. purdue. edu/tractor_safety/ Stop
Stop the Engine Start the Engine Speed Up Come to Me Lower Equipment http: //www. four-h. purdue. edu/tractor_safety/
