Unit 6 TEACHER’S SOCIAL ROLES In School, in Community, to Student’s Parents, to Students and to Fellow Teachers
Objectives of Unit 6 After learning Unit 6, students are expected to be able to explain teacher’s social roles: 1. In school, 2. In community, 3. To students, 4. To student’s parents, and 5. To fellow teachers.
A. Concepts • Who is the teacher? According to the Law of NES 1989, Ch. 27 Art 3: a teacher is an educator who is specifically assigned to teach at the elementary, middle, and high schools.
• Based on Law No 20/2003, Ch. 39 Art 3: an educator who teaches at the elementary and high schools is called a teacher, and an educator who teaches at the higher education is called a university teacher or “docent”. Benjamin Bloom
According to Law No 14/2005 about teachers, Ch. 2 Art 1: a teacher has a position as a professional at the Elementary and High Education as well as at the Early Childhood Education (PAUD).
• According to Law No. 19/2005 on NES, Ch. 28 Artt 3: competencies of teachers as educators at the Elementary and High Schools as well as Early Childhood Education include: • a. pedagogic competence; • b. personality competence • c. professional competence; and • d. social competence.

D. Social Role towards Students and Student’s Parents 1. Towards Students (Connel): a teacher is. . . a. an educator, b. a model, c. a Counselor. 2. Towards Student’s Parents: Similarity: to develop child’s personality into maturity. Difference: school vs. home.
E. Role towards Fellow Teachers According to Teacher’s Codes of Conducts (9 points): Art. 6: Teachers both individually and in groups develop and upgrade their professional quality; Art. 7: Teachers create and maintain good relationship among fellow teachers both in and outside work environment. Art. 8: Teachers together maintain, develop, and improve the quality of teacher’s professional organization as a means of their services.
