CONTROLLING THE PROCESS • Why Control Production? • Quality Control • Process measures process

CONTROLLING THE PROCESS • Why Control Production? • Quality Control • Process measures process output and compares it with a standard. It corrects deviations from standard. A deviation is departure from established standard • Quality Control Systems • Measures a parameter • Compares parameter with specified value • Adjusts the system to bring parameter in line with standard

CONTROLLING THE PROCESS • Test Equipment • Used to check that production equipment is

CONTROLLING THE PROCESS • Test Equipment • Used to check that production equipment is working properly. This includes micrometers, thermometers, and ohmmeters • Calibration • Test equipment must measure to a certain standard. Calibration is the setting of test equipment to measure to this standard • Inspection • An assessment activity compares to specific product quality with standard value

CONTROLLING THE PROCESS • Inspection Procedures Ø Know the safety requirements and environmental guidelines

CONTROLLING THE PROCESS • Inspection Procedures Ø Know the safety requirements and environmental guidelines related to inspections Ø Select the correct inspection tools Ø Use inspection procedures correctly Ø Have specific instructions on use of the testing tools and calibration procedures Ø Have specific instructions on use of expected values and tolerances Ø Have specific instructions on procedures for reporting variances Ø Inspect materials against the correct specifications Ø Follow procedures for identifying good products and nonconforming products, which do not meet specifications Ø Follow procedures for handling nonconforming materials

CONTROLLING THE PROCESS • Monitoring the Process Ø Process Control • Inspection during production

CONTROLLING THE PROCESS • Monitoring the Process Ø Process Control • Inspection during production to check whether process is functioning correctly Ø Sampling (Statistical) • Inspects only selected products Sampling and inspection should take place according to preset schedule and set of procedures Ø Process Variation • Random variation is fluctuation in value that is not due to a specific cause Ø Assignable Variation • Fluctuation in a value that can be attributed to a specific cause Ø Statistical Control Limits • Control chart is an analytical tool showing results of statistical analysis. Each chart has an upper control limit (UCL), and Lower control limit (LCL)
