Absolutism and Divine Right Monarch has their power from God, there are no checks on his/her power. They have absolute control.
John Locke’s Natural Rights He believed that everyone has natural rights that were are born with, life , liberty, and property. He said it was the government’s job to protect these rights. If they didn’t, then the people had the right to REVOLT!
Montesquieu’s Views on Government. He thought power should be shared between three branches of government. This way no ONE branch would rise to be too powerful.
Social Contract This is the idea that the people agree to give up some rights to the government in return for an orderly society that protects them.
Hobbes view of Social Contract. He thought man was evil and that we needed an Absolute Monarchy to keep us in line.
Locke’s view of the social contract. He thought we were essentially good and that the government’s only job should be to protect our rights.
Napoleon ! Napoleon was able to take power because he was a very successful general and the government of France was weak.

France’s Economic Problems They were broke, spent all their money on wars and parties. There was also a terrible winter that ruined all the crops. All of this led to food shortages.
Storming of the Bastille People of Paris formed a mob and attacked the Bastille in order to gain ammunition to fight the King’s army.
Women’s March on Versailles Angry with the high price of bread, women marched to Versailles, kidnapped the King and Queen, and brought them back to Paris.
Agricultural Revolution As farming techniques got better, farming got more efficient. This led to a decrease in demand for farmers, leaving many people without work.
Invisible Hand Man will act in his own interest and supply and demand will always meet, as long as the government stays out of the economy.
Industrial Revolution Effects on Workers Many people went to work in factories. Conditions were often dangerous
“Class Struggle” Marx’s idea that the “haves” and “have nots” were in constant conflict and struggle for power.
Capitalism Laissez-Faire, government stays out of the economy, allows it to flow naturally. People are poor because they are not talented.
Communism Government (people) control the “means of production. ” (factories, railroads). There are no rich and no poor, everyone has a job and everyone gets equal pay.
Why did Industrial Revolution happen in Britain? They had a small population, and coal.
Spinning Jenny Invention that woven cloth together very fast, helped produce more textiles (clothes) quickly.
Supply and Demand The price of goods will always work out if the government just stays out of it. For example, the price of Iphones is what it is because the demand is so high. Demand for good products will lead to people producing good products. The government doesn’t need to be involved.
