Teaching Objectives • Acquaint students with the basic formality of notices. • Acquaint students with the general writing style of notices. • Master key words/phrases and useful expressions in notices.
Teaching Contents What is a notice? A notice is a written form to inform the concerned people of an event (in most cases, a meeting) so as to enable the people to arrange their time and tasks in advance. It may appear on a blackboard or a bulletin board; it may also be written as a letter or an email. A notice is usually formal in style.

Sample 1 The University Commission of Academic Research Notice All the members of the University Commission of Academic Research are expected to meet in the University Conference room on Monday, May 5 at 2: 00 p. m. to discuss questions of inter-collegiate academic exchanges. May 2, 2016
Sample 2 English Teaching & Research Group NOTICE There will be an English lecture on the differences between American English and British English by a famous English professor , Mr. Alexander, the author of Follow Me and New Concept English, which are well known to us all. It will be given in the Lecture Hall from 7: 00 to 9: 00 on Saturday evening, September 23. Those who are interested in it are warmly welcome. Steps of writing a notice • • Place “Notice” in the centre just above the main text What will happen (the purpose) When something will happen Where something will happen To whom the information is given Who issues the notice and when it is issued Language should be concise, simple, accurate and formal
Language Features & Reminders I. In notice writing people tend to sound formal and avoid using words like “I”, “we”, etc Compare: a.
