ROSTOW’S THEORY OF DEVELOPMENT -Will re-visit in Industrialization Unit -Getis textbook does not name Rostow’s Theory of Development, but refers to it in this week’s reading 337 -338. -Foulberg discusses it in Chapter 10. p. 326
ROSTOW’S STAGE OF GROWTH (5 STAGES) 1. Traditional society: Economy focused on primary production such as agriculture and fishing. Limited Wealth Money spent on things that do not promote economic development (food for oneself) Technical knowledge is low.
STAGE 2: PRECONDITIONS FOR TAKEOFF Preconditions for Take off: Leadership begins to invest the country’s wealth in infrastructure Greater access to roads, ports, electrification, and school systems. More technical knowledge is learned that stimulated the economy
STAGE 3: TAKEOFF Take off: Economy begins to shift focus onto a limited number of industrial exports Majority still participates in traditional agriculture Begins shift towards working in a factory Technical experience is gained in industrial production and business management
STAGE 4: DRIVE TO MATURITY Drive to Maturity: Technical (or technology) advancements diffuse throughout the country Advancements in industrial production are seen in many sectors Workers become increasingly skilled Higher levels of education Fewer people engaged in agriculture
STAGE 5: AGE OF MASS CONSUMPTION High Mass Consumption: Highly specialized production such as vehicles, energy, and consumer products Technical knowledge and education levels are high Agriculture is mechanized and employs small labor force
