THESIS STATEMENT ●A thesis is a direct statement that explains the topic of your essay, what you know about that topic, and why you believe it. ●A thesis statement is made up of three parts: ○Topic: Identify what you are talking about. ○Claim: What do you think about the topic based on the question or prompt? ○Direction: What are the main reasons you can support your claim? This will basically outline the body paragraphs of your essay. ●Topic + Claim (your position) + Direction
A THESIS IS NOT AN ANNOUNCEMENT ●Thesis statements are not announcements of the author's purpose or assignment. ●A good thesis does not need to state: ○“This paper will discuss…. ” ○“This paper will show” ○“I am going to prove that…. ” ○“I am going to talk about…” ●Avoid merely announcing the topic. ○Announcement: In this paper I will discuss the causes and effects of the French Revolution and then argue as to whether or not it was successful. ○Announcement: The thesis of this paper is the difficulty of solving the environmental problems of the Indian River Lagoon.
