Exile and Remembrance: The Prophets: God Will Send a Messiah Micah Isaiah “From you shall come froth for me/one who is to be ruler in Israel, /…he take his place as shpherd/by the strength of the Lord, /…he shall be peace” (Micah 5: 1, 3 -4) “We had all gone astray like sheep all following our own way. But the LORD laid upon him the guilt of us all. /… My servant, the just one, shall justify the many, their iniquity he shall bear. ” (Isaiah 53: 611) Ezekiel Jeremiah “I will appoint one shepherd over them to pasture them, …” (Ezekiel 34: 23) “See, days are coming…/when I will raise up wisely, /he shall do what is just and right in the land” (Jeremiah 23: 5 -6) Jesus Christ is the Messiah described by the prophets. Christ always is there to bring us back from our own exile – our separation from God because of sin.

Faith Words • • exile messiah • messiah – a person chosen to save people from a particular fate. The word means “savior. ” Messiah, chosen by God to free us from sin and death. During our life on Earth, we are in exile from Heaven. In the Sacraments, especially the celebration of the Eucharist, we meet Christ and receive grace to continue our journey to our heavenly home.

Exile and Remembrance: St. Maximilian Kolbe • • Raymond Kolbe was born in Poland in 1894. He entered into the Franciscan seminary at age 13 and was ordained priest when was 24 in 1918. He took the name Maximilian Mary. • • Worked hard to promote devotion to the Blessed Mother. Mary appeared in a dream when he was 12 years old with two crowns – white and red. The white meant that he should keep himself pure and the red meant he would become a martyr. • During World War II, Nazis invaded Poland in 1939 and killed many and drove others out of their homes including Jews, gypsies, Catholic priests and nuns. Father Kolbe hid as many as 2, 000 Jewish people and Poles, who were also persecuted, in his Polish monastery Arrested by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz concentration camp in 1941 with four other priests. There he heard confessions and offered Holy Communion. • • • Offered himself in place a young husband father who were going to be killed. Prayed, sang hymns, and recited the Rosary while waiting to die of starvation. Killed by lethal injection after two weeks. On October 10, 1982, Pope John Paul II canonized Maximilian Kolbe as a “martyr of charity. ” Feast day is on August 14, the date of his martyrdom St. Maximilian Kolbe dedicated his life to the Lord and His Mother. He died as a martyr in the Nazi Concentration Camp, giving up his life to spare other men’s lives.
