Overview of Module 1 Lesson 1 Objective Students will define “family” and determine advantages and disadvantages of various types of families. SLIDESMANIA. COM Standards Standard 1 - Family and Society Identify the differences in family structures Analyze the meaning of the family and the value of families to individuals and society Essential ? s What is a Family? How has the American family changed over the last 70 years?
What is a Family? ❖ First ask students to think about this question: “How would you define a family? ” ❖ Then instruct them to write their definition of family (can be done in notebook, on a paper, or in the chat of zoom if virtual). Ask for volunteers to share. ❖ Discuss key similarities or differences in their definitions. ❖ Use video or edpuzzle to show there are many different ways to define a family. ❖ Use Resource 1 to examine various family structures. ❖ Show video about the changing American family. Discuss video with the class. ❖ Revisit their definitions from beginning of class and have them revise if necessary. SLIDESMANIA. COM

Overview of Module 1 Lesson 4 Objective Students will explore the fragility of families and discuss problems that change families. Students will explain strategies for working through family challenges and characteristics of strong families. SLIDESMANIA. Explain the function of the family in providing a nurturing environment for its members. What are ways families can be strengthened and work through problems?
What makes families strong? ❖ First invite students to suggest ideas about “What makes a family strong? ” ❖ List suggested characteristics on the board/digital board. Include the following if students do not suggest them: ➢ Building self-esteem ➢ Communicating effectively ➢ Sharing responsibilities ➢ Showing respect and trust ➢ Spending time together ➢ Establishing traditions ➢ Relating to people outside the family ❖ Discuss how all families have challenges, and the strength of a family is not determined by how many problems they have, but how they work together to overcome those challenges. Overview of Module 2 Lesson 1 Objective Students will distinguish between myths and reality of love and marriage. SLIDESMANIA. What are the realities of married life?
Use video clips from the decades of TV couples Lead students to consider that in the earlier program marriages and families didn’t seem to have any real problems and family life was wonderful with expectations of living “happilyever-after”. Discuss how the current TV shows display more realistic expectations within marriages and families. SLIDESMANIA. COM
Panel of couples Invite a panel of married couples to speak to your class about the expectations of marriage. Invite a newlywed couple (1 -3 years), a couple who has been married for several years (3 -10) and a couple who has been married longer term (11 -60 years). Prompt them to speak on the following topics: SLIDESMANIA. COM What did they expect marriage to be like before they were married? What did they do to prepare for marriage? What have they learned that they wish they knew before they were married? What advice do they have for teens who are dating and entering relationships?
Module 4 Lesson 3: Conflicts and Crises SLIDESMANIA. COM
Overview of Module 4 Lesson 3 Objective Students will identify common conflicts or crises families face and ways to cope with those conflicts or crises. SLIDESMANIA. Apply strategies for coping with conflicts & crises. How can families cope with conflicts and crises they face?
Family Simulations in Groups Have students form “family” groups representing the various family structures and assume a role of a family member in the structure (parent, child, grandparent, etc. ). Have each group select one of the following family situations from Resource 1. With their groups, have students respond to each of the following questions: SLIDESMANIA. COM What is the challenge the family is facing? What might each family member do to help cope with the situation? In what ways might each family member’s actions help lesson the impact of the situation? What is the expected outcome for the family if the strategies are applied? You can utilize visuals by having students make a poster and have the family groups share their responses with the class. Digital applications: Use breakout rooms Use collaborative tools like google slides, google docs, or jamboard instead a poster.
